The unconditional love of an animal is one of the best feelings, second only to a child. An animal will bring years of happiness, laughs, kiss, hugs, and love. When it comes time to add a furry 4-legged pet to a family, adopting from a local animal shelter is a better option instead of buying from a private breeder. An animal adopted from a local animal shelter gets a second chance of life instead of dying like the three million euthanized animals. Adoptions gives an animal a second chance at life, find a forever home and helps with the control of animal overpopulation.
Over 3.7 million animals are euthanized on a yearly basis, which is the main reason why adopting an animal is more humane than buying from a breeder. According to several sources, animals who are either surrendered by owners or found wandering the streets, even though there is not a set amount of time most animals are euthanized after 5 days or so, depending on the condition of the animal. Animals that are sickly, old, or aggressive have a greater probability of euthanization. On the other hand, according to www.animalcare.lacounty.gov, “pet’s physical needs, personality, temperament, medical history, housebroken status, and tolerance of other animals and children, can assist us in placing the pet in the most suitable home for its physical and behavioral needs, (2014).” In Los Angeles County alone in 2013-2014, there were 14,582 cats, 9,861 dogs, and 2,993 other animals euthanized, in comparison only 2,837 cars, 8,859 dogs and 768 other animals adopted into new homes. The saddest part is $2.2 billion spent on live animal purchases in the last year.

When considering adding an animal to the family, please consider the benefits of giving a shelter animal a forever home. There is no reason that an animal ought to die based solely on the fact that they have been at the local animal shelter for too long. The dog and cat that you bring home will bring years of joy, happiness, and unconditional love.

Most pets are put down or run away rather than have gone through expensive treatment. Even in the aforementioned article “The Last Meow” it mentions a statistics that states, “ Every year, while pets like theirs are saved by the most elaborate means some six million strays are put to sleep.” I have personal experience with my first ever dog whom I loved and the sweetest beagle named Snoopy. In his adult life, Snoopy had ear infection, to which we laid out the money for his ear medication. We paid for the medicine because it was a reasonable price that wouldn’t financially harm us.When he got really old he suffered from back discus problems which hindered his ability to walk and it slowly got worse. The only option was to pay for an expensive surgery that most likely wouldn't lead to a long term solution for is back. We didn’t have all the money in the world so the obvious decision was made and we put him to sleep. In cases like mine, people do not give up the money because of unrighteous selfish reasons but because of their obligation to take care of a family or just themselves. Plus it is just common sense not to go into debut for a pet and the few examples of people who do overspend are considered to be financially irresponsible

Sadly this happens to various animals each year that are brought to Kill Shelters. The ASPCA has stated that three to four million animals are euthanized in shelters in the United States. An absolutely shocking 60% of all animals that belong to shelters(McLellan). Many of these animals that are irrationally killed are completely worthy of adoption. The main reason for all these senseless killings is overpopulation.
Animals are precious, loving, and sweet creatures but many are having their lives cut short. Did you know that 7.6 million animals enter shelters every year? Of those animals, thirty one percent of dogs are euthanized and forty one percent of cats are euthanized. If you do the math, that is 2.4 million dogs and 3.1 million cats. Why are we doing this to our animals? They're living creatures just like us, even if they can't tell us. As you read this paper, you'll learn about what euthanization is, learn the reasons for shelters killing our furry friends, and get an inside look at the terrible practice of euthanization.
Animals are overpopulated, and it is costing countries money to euthanize, or use chemicals kill animals with a shot, animals. Money is also being taken for shelters to operate. Some countries didn’t pay for the euthanization of their pet problem though, they found another way to try to fix the issue. “.... the dogcatchers of New York caught 5,825 dogs, which were then placed into crates and lowered into the East River to drown.”(Jennifer Sexton and Tom Warhol, Domestic Animal Overpopulation). According to Jennifer Sexton and Tom Warhol in Domestic Animal Overpopulation, “Catching, feeding and caring for unwanted animals costs taxpayers and private agencies millions of dollars each year, as do adoption and education programs.” Citizens, animals, and shelters are affected by this issue of animal overpopulation. Citizens are affected because their taxes are being put to shelters, the shelters are then cost for chemicals to put the pets to sleep. The animals are th...
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 7.6 million companion pets enter animal shelters across the United States each year, nearly evenly disrupted between dogs and cats . These animals are abandoned for reasons including families no longer being able to care for them (sickness/death of an owner), to families not wanting them (the novelty wearing of the animal wearing off), to the animals being born into puppy mills to finally animals that are loved being lost from their owners. These animals do not understand what is happening to them and rely on the kindness of humans to provide for them in shelters until their forever home can be found.

Anyone, who visits an animal shelter, as I do, sees an extraordinary number of beautiful, affectionate, and desperate dogs and cats. The majority of animals in any particular shelter are dogs, usually adults, for whom there aren't enough adoptive homes waiting. A few may have come from responsible breeders, whose owners do not realize that the breeder will take them back, many are those who are lost, and/or from owners who simply got tired of them. Some are pet shop puppies from a puppy mill that did not meet the owner's expectations due to health, temperament, or other reasons. A large number usually turn out to be the result of deliberate and irresponsible home breeding. These people are known as "back-yard breeders." And that is not a compliment.
Have you ever wondered, how it feels to be in a place where is overcrowded, and you are next in line to be euthanize? This is the life of the shelter animal when no one adopts them for a certain period of time. According to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or known as ASPCA, each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized, which are 1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats. I am sure; most of you have some point in your life, owned a dog or a cat. Whether you are an animal lover or not, you don’t want to see innocent animals losing their lives. I personally have adopted a dog from a local shelter. There is no doubt that pet adoption from a shelter is a satisfying decision that will save innocent
Overpopulation of unwanted pets has become a major issue in the United States. According to Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society, there are 70 million stray cats and dogs in the United Stated. 6 to 8 million of those enter shelters each year. An estimated 3 to 4 million are euthanized in shelters
Many people believe that the only way to get a pet is to “buy” one without considering adopting, which is why I believe people should consider looking up better options and become more knowledgeable. There are so many reasons why someone shouldn’t buy a pet from a breeder, and so many benefits from adopting a pet from your local shelter/animal rescue.
