Every year, around one million animals are abused or killed according to a study done by the Humane Society. An abused animal at home may mean more than just the family pet is being hurt. In America, the laws regarding animal abuse are being tightened and vigorously looked at. Intentional cruelty to animals is strongly correlated with other crimes and therefore that is why in 2014 the FBI announced they would be tracking all cases of animal abuse in the United States. Animal rights should be more important to the general public because there is a known connection between animal abuse and human violence, children who abuse animals signal personalities that may lead to future abusive behavior and punishing known abusers could potentially affect
A survey found that in 88 percent of animal abuse cases, there was also child abuse happening in the same household. Another study gathered from women seeking shelter at safe houses stated that in 71 percent of their houses, the abuser had threatened to or inflicted pain on the family pet. As of early 2016, the FBI has added animal cruelty to its list of Class A felonies. This act allowed law enforcement agencies to cross–report cases in the hopes they will be able to track down more of these violent people. The categories for abuse fall into four separate sections: neglect, intentional abuse or torture, organized abuse, and sexual abuse. These categories may help with the detainment of criminals in a larger scale and may also help create strategies for intervention. The most common animals who receive abuse are dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency have investigated many cases where drug cartels were running narcotics through animal fighting operations. It is widely believed a lack of sensitivity to animal lives links to more serious crimes such as drug trafficking, rape, and homicide. Sargent David Hunt, a dogfighting expert with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Columbus, Ohio stated, “With traditional law enforcement, the attitude has been that we have enough stuff on our plate, let the others worry about Fluffy and Muffy. But I’m starting to see a shift in that mentality now.” Hunt is a well-travelled Sergeant who travels to teach law-enforcement agents across the country about dogfighting and how to handle the situation. He teaches people to understand the link between animal violence and domestic violence. He tells them, “It is part of a larger nexus of crimes and the psyche behind them.” His words echo those in his field around him.
