Anemia is described as a condition that occurs when the body lacks a large number of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin, ( hemoglobin is the part of iron protein in the red blood cells that binds to oxygen) (Ratini, 2015). When that happen, the red blood cells cannot carry adequate amount of oxygen to the tissues and the rest of the body (Ratini, 2015).
According to WebMD, there are over 400 different types of Anemia and over 3 million people in the United States have it. Anemia can range from mild to severe and in some cases it can lead to life threatening obstacles. Most Anemia are divided into three categories: Anemia caused by blood loss, lack of red blood production, and high rates of red blood cell destruction (Ratini, 2015). Regardless of the type of Anemia a person acquires symptoms like, pale skin, weakness, dizziness, fatigue, and drowsiness are generally similar because of the red blood cells inability to carry oxygen. Only in severe cases of Anemia symptoms such as, difficulty of breathing, abnormalities of the heart and digestive complaints occurs (NIH, 2012). Anemia can also come from other sources. For instance, Anemia can be inherited, cause by eating disorder, infections, some cancers, or drugs and toxins (Columbia Encyclopedia, 2015).

The majority of Anemia falls under three groups: blood loss Anemia, which cause bleeding due to iron deficiency or vitamin B12. Another group is the lack of blood production anemia, and the third group is high rates of blood destruction anemia (NIH, 2012). Nearly all of the Anemia types share similar symptoms which are characterized by fatigue, weakness and shortness of breath. Because the symptoms are so vague many people with Anemia goes untreated for a long time. Therefore, conditions that could have been mild are now severe (Nabili, 2014). Often, most types of Anemia are short term and curable if identified and treat promptly. In many cases people with Anemia can live a long and productive life (NIH, 2012).
