Andrew is a college-aged caucasian male attending a music school for drumming. Andrew is extremely talented. Andrew has acquired this talent from obsessive practicing, often resulting with staying up all hours of the night, playing past the point where his hands have become broken and bloody. Andrew became increasingly verbally aggressive with the other drummers in the band over the performing seat; before a performance, Andrew was involved in a severe car accident, refused medical attention, and ran to his performance so that the other drummers would not take his spot. The first intervention tool to consider is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. Rather than focusing on how to change his behavior, SFBT would work with Andrew to find a point in time where his behavior was less destructive, and use that perspective to find proper solutions. This technique emphasizes acknowledging and celebrating the ways in which the client is already successful, which would do well to sooth the client’s narcissistic tendencies (Antin, 2015). While medication is not generally used to treat NPD, the incident in which Andrew refused medical treatment following a severe car accident in order to make his drumming performance shows that he may be a danger to himself. With that in mind, if Andrew is assessed with some level of severe depression, proper medication may be warranted for stability. Finally, Family Therapy may prove very beneficial for Andrew’s well-being. Andrew often seems apathetic towards the negative effects of his actions towards himself and to his loved ones. For that reason, I believe that a family therapy setting could allow his loved ones to lend their perspective of his actions enough that he would want to make the necessary adjustments to correct his
It is my goal to become a school counselor in a local high school. As a school counselor, it is also important to try and understand the different experiences that children go through in order to get through to them. After studying the different counseling theories, I have discovered that each theory is valid and there are ideas and techniques that I would use out of each of them. However, there are some theories more than others that I would use to guide me daily as a school counselor. Modern day counseling is equipped with a wide variety of therapies, techniques and approaches. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast three approaches of therapy. Also in this essay the views of the person and the Therapeutic process will be discussed. The three models that are going to be compared are Adlerian, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Solution Focused Brief therapy (SFBT). This essay is going to highlight the similarities and differences of the models and their main focus, and how the three models will help the clients choose goals that best fit their environment and resources. The main goal of using these models is to help people.
As we have learned in class, career counseling must have a base or framework in traditional theoretical counseling. Furthermore, as Niles and Harris-Bowlsbey mentioned, career counseling is like a sub set of normal counseling that may require many of the same aspects of regular mental health counseling (2009, p. 242). Through out my counseling development I have clicked with solution-focused Therapy as my main mode of counseling. As I have adopted that as main focus it seemed logical for me that I would want to research more. On of the questions that I have pondered is how does solution focused therapy differ form traditional modes on counseling, in terms of career development? I found a journal article that centers on that very question. The article is derived from a college in South Africa that compares and contrasts the two modalities of traditional career counseling and post-modern career counseling.
Brandon’s mother reported that the majority of his inappropriate behaviors were commenced during dealings with her boyfriend. His teachers at his school also report that Brandon’s behaviors are parallel to his classmates who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but for unknown reasons, his mother has failed to allow psychological testing as she fears that he will be labeled as crazy or slow child, and she is unsure if she agrees with the use of anti-psychotic medication with children. Brandon’s mother reported that he has participated in counseling to address his challenging behaviors, which include physical aggression, difficulty following rules at home and school, and using inappropriate grammar with sexual insinuations toward females. Brandon has a diagnosis of Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Brandon and his mother both reported that they stopped therapy in the past because there was no change in Brandon’s behavior. Case conceptualization and treatment planning is used by therapist to assist in determining a client’s diagnosis, goals, and treatment plan that is most effective in determining the issues surrounding the clients diagnosis. It is crucial that the client’s treatment plan is specific to the individual, is relational and appropriate to the needs of the client.
Lastly, there is family therapy, and in my opinion the most important. This is essential for both the patient and members of their family to understand and learn how to cope with this behavior. This style of therapy will teach family members not to be co-dependent and allow the patient to take responsibility for their actions.

The case scenario is of a homeless young guy named Jim who appears to have an intellectual disability. Jim is addicted to marijuana and abuses alcohol and has suicidal thoughts. He has anger control issues where he is known to verbally threaten others. He currently has a counsellor who he had established a therapeutic relationship. From these sessions, the counsellor has learned that Jim had been physically abused by his stepfather. From reading this case scenario about Jim, it is evident that he would benefit from several different approaches or interventions including motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy.
The theory that I chose to analyze in this paper is the constructivist approach with a dual use of both the Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) and Narrative Therapy. In my worldview change happens when an individual is motivated to persist and accomplish their goals. In my own personal philosophy, I am optimistic that every student is capable of discovering a solution that best fits in solving their problem and that everything we do in life is interconnected to helping us accomplish our ideal goals. I plan to work with first generation college students after completing the Educational Counseling program at USC and see the Constructivist approach to best accommodate the needs of first generation college student population. By using the basic motivational interviewing techniques a counselor could elicit information about Ted’s problem areas and concerns. When Ted’s ambivalence has resolved and he has made a commitment to change the Responsibility aspect of the FRAMES technique could be implemented. Responsibility allows a client to see that counseling is a collaborative process but the client is responsible for their own change (Miller & Rollnick, 2012). As a counselor, this is where I would implement treatment planning. Advice would be apart of suggesting AA meetings and strategies for stress management. An integral part of advice giving and treatment options is to make sure that Ted has a variety of options to choose from (menu of options). Although we did not have time for the lecture on Chapter 15, I found myself intrigued with the information I read on solution-focused therapies. The term solution-focused therapy kept coming up in my classes, but I really did not have an understanding of exactly what it entailed. In reviewing this chapter, I not only learned a lot, but also found myself in agreement with much of what I read. While there is no such thing as a one size fits all therapy, Solution-focused therapy has a lot to offer clients.
I have been very fortunate since the early beginning of my counseling journey to have a mentor. Because of that mentor relationship I feel that I have the benefit to find a counseling perspective that undoubtedly works more me. That counseling model is Solution Focused Therapy, which is a pragmatic approach that focuses on problem solution or management by the most efficient route. Brief counseling does not espouse the notion of ‘cure’ or have character change as one of its goals (Burwell & Chen, 2006, p. 191). The article I found in Counseling Psychology Quarterly, takes the basic aspects of the solution focused counseling model and equates them to how they are effective in matters of career treatment.
One method he used is client-centered therapy. This is a humanistic therapy in which the therapist uses techniques such as active listening within a genuine, accepting, empathic environment to facilitate clients’ growth. He also uses exposure therapy. This is when you treat anxieties by exposing the client to the things they fear and avoid. Lastly, Travis uses cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy teaches people new, more adaptive ways of thinking and acting. You can see an example of client-centered therapy when Travis first meets Nora. He always genuine and accepting and actively listens to what she is saying. An example of when Travis uses exposure therapy is when he takes Nora out into town and slowly exposes her to the outside world. And and example of cognitive therapy would be when Travis reveals to Nora that her aunt had a husband at one point. After she found out, she gained a new perspective on the way she was

By re-establishing the connection to the patient’s feelings you accomplish the goal of allowing them to create emotional interaction with others. Individuals who suffer from personality disorders have conflict with authority figures consequently provides the explanation of their incessant involvement with criminal activity.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy is a unique approach to therapy that neither focuses on the past nor the future but on what is possible now. SFBT is a post modern approach to therapy that became popular in the 1960's and 70s based on the theory that posits small progress can lead to long term change. This approach was created by...creatorsThe clients and the counselor collaborate to establish realistic goals that can be reached in a relatively short period of time. The counselor works to create an environment where clients can be honest. SFBT believe that analyzing problems is not needed in the process of change. Behavior change is seen as an integral part of change in clients therapeutic process. Both the counselor and the client come together to create goals to incite a change in behavior.
Assuredly though, Kevin’s family is supportive of him, and this is a valuable basis for an on-going alliance. Furthermore, the learned problem-solving and communication strategies equip each individual to navigate through potential future conflicts, reducing the need for repeat-therapy. Lastly, though it is unknown whether Kevin is medicated for his depressive disorder, young people have an improved outcome with a combined treatment approach of pharmacotherapy and either CBT or systemic family therapy (A. Hall, personal communication, 17 April 2014; March, 2006; The Werry Centre, 2010; Nayar, 2012). All safety and appropriateness considered, this approach would improve Kevin’s mood and ability to engage in therapy and as a consequence, also improve his other social relationships (Nayar, 2012).
