Of the many classes in Ancient Greece, that of the artisan was not highly respected. Despite the facts that the products of their labor were present in almost every aspect of Ancient Grecian life, the artisan’s role in society was often overlooked. With The Foundry Cup, the artist is able relate the work of himself and other artisans to the age of heros by inserting himself and other artisans directly into one of Greece’s most beloved tales, The Iliad. (by creating a balance between the world of war and the world of craft in his work). The outside of the cup shows an active foundry, full of workers and statues. It is full of the foundry workers, making them the dominant subject in this portrait. The roles seen on this side of the bowl are an inversion of the roles on the other side. Here, the workers are seen as strong and powerful. Just as the statue is nude, so are many of the workers in this scene. The center artisan has one knee bent, with his hip jutting out and his hand resting on his thigh. His posture gives a clear indication of authority, as he observes the work going on in the foundry. The center worker parallels the heroic soldier; both are directly in the center of the bowl, with well defined muscles, set in a power stance for their respective occupations. The floor of the foundry is littered with the body parts of various statues. These bodyparts mimic the gruesome battle grounds so often described in the Iliad. One of the workers looks as though he has just decapitated someone; his arm is raised above a statue 's neck, wielding a hammer, while a disembodied head lies up at the floor and gazes at him. Scattered around the floor and on the wall, the body parts are intermingled amongst the various tools shown in the foundry.
