Did you know that five million to seven million companion animals enter shelters nationwide each year? Spaying and neutering pets needs to be supported by more communities of people. The American Kennel Club (AKC) is opposed to mandatory sterilization, they state that it, “creates a hardship for responsible breeders.” Spaying and neutering is typically seen by a majority of the population as inhumane and an unnecessary violation of animal rights. The American Veterinary Medical Associations recommend that state and local governments develop effective dog and cat population control programs. A few of those reasons are because getting your animals fixed increases your furry friends longevity, helps to keep the pet population at the average level, and it allows other animals to be adopted, as well as preventing some from being euthanized. If we want to have our pets around, and stop seeing the homeless ones being put down, then we must take action ourselves. We need to come together and agree that spaying and neutering is a way better option than getting the animals that don’t have a home killed. After all, there are more benefits than disadvantages. Nationally, roughly four million animals are killed in shelters every year. Of these, roughly 95% of all shelter animals are healthy and treatable. (No Kill Advocacy Center). No animal should have to ever be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill shelters save more money than other shelters.
According to the Humane Society, 4-5 million cats and dogs that live in shelters are euthanized each year! This does not include the total number of pets in families who choose to euthanize their pets. In the article, "Rare White Rhino Population Drops to 3 with Euthanasia at San Diego Zoo," we are told that there are only 3 White Rhinos left in the world, due to euthanizing. According to the Washington Post, a 41-year-old white rhino named Nola, was put to sleep due to a bacterial infection and age-related health problems. It is vital that we stand up and realize what is right for animals. We need to have a voice and speak for them because they cannot speak for themselves. We need to realize that the practice of euthanizing is not right. It is not our right to determine when an animal should die.
According to the article “Pet Statistics” by the ASPCA estimates there are 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats owned in the United States. It is impossible to determine the number of stray dogs and cats, but the ASPCA estimates there are 70 million cats alone that are strays in the US (“Pet Statistics”). The overpopulation of dogs and cats live either on the streets and die each day, they live in a shelter and try to get adopted, but even then they die. The ASPCA states that nationwide about 7.6 million companion animals enter the shelter and of the 7.6 million approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats (“Pet Statistics”).
There are many people in the world that hate the way something about them looks. So their way of changing that is to undergo a surgery to fix their imperfections. There are also many ways that you can do the same exact thing with a pet. With any pet there is always things that people might want to change for a health reason or a cosmetic reason. With these procedures there are many pros, but there are also many cons that come with it.

Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. Seeing maimed animals are not pleasant images. Those images sometimes appear across computer and television screens. The advocacy groups who place these images in the public’s view are trying to jolt people into the realization that abuse exists. For every ten seconds that goes by an animal is getting abused (“Animal… Statistics”). One statistic states that “71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32% reported their children had hurt or killed animals” (“Animal… Violence”). Animal cruelty comes in several forms, some of which people do not know. Pets are a common sight in many households today. In fact, according to the APPMA National Pet Owners Survey, 63 percent of U.S. households own a pet. At the top of this percentage are dogs and cats. One of the most important decisions an owner of a dog or cat has to make is whether or not to get them spayed or neutered. There are various reasons why people choose to not have this done, but all those reasons can be proven invalid. Many factors come in to play as why this is such an important thing to do. The effects of dogs and cats not being spayed or neutered has become such a major issue that it should be a law that all pet owners have to get their pet spayed or neutered.
One Green Planet says that there are still more than 70 million needy animals, only around 6-8 million enter shelters, and only about 20% adopt their pets from a shelter. Such a small percentage but there are still many animals getting put down. One of the main reasons I am against animal breeding is because most of the animals who get bought end up getting abandoned, which is why the number of strays increase. According to their research, there are about 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats in the U.S that are put down to sleep every 11 seconds, and often the animals being put to sleep are offspring of pets who has a permanent home and human companion. This led Humane Society to believe that the process of spaying and neutering is a very crucial process which needs to be done towards every pets to ensure that there are no unwanted breeding and significantly reducing the amount of animals being left to stray.
