Society influences us all. In his talk “Zion in the Midst of Babylon,” Elder David R. Stone talked about how our culture, or our society, can affect our choice of clothing, food, and even influence what our priorities in life are. He said, “All too often, we are like puppets on a string, as our culture determines what is “cool”” (Stone 2006). The people around us can influence and change what decisions we make every day. While looking back on my own life I found three central themes that describe the biggest societal influences in my life; my family, my religion, and the word’s view of women have all shaped my decisions in life. My family has been a huge influence in my life. I know that they have helped to shape me into the woman that I have become today. One huge influence that my family had on my life is when we moved from Ogden to Rexburg. My Dad had a job working for Weber, but left it because he was offered a job up here at Ricks College. I have visited Ogden since I have grown up and the environments are completely different. Rexburg is a very small town with an extremely high population of Latter Day Saints. In high school those who weren’t members of the Church were a minority. In Ogden that isn’t the case and I believe this simple difference between the two cities would have affected my life. I know that I was changed by the move, but I am happy with who I am because of it. Another way that my family has influenced my life is in my choice of extracurricular activities. My grandmother did sports in high school and all of her daughters did sports in high school. Growing up it was almost expected of me and my sisters to play sports as well (Journal Entry Week 4). It wasn’t expected as the boys as much, but... ... middle of paper ... ... changed or resist change. After keeping a journal I was able to see three major ways that society has influenced my life. A journal is a valuable tool that allows us to reflect on the past and to reread the past and analyze it. When we look back we are better able to see and understand how society is influencing our own lives. I found that two of the major influences in my life were very positive influence while the third was more of a negative influence. By keeping a journal I can look at my life and see where society is influencing me and if I need to make any changes in my life. It will be hard to resist the negative pull of society, but as Elder Stone said it is possible to resist, “We do not need to become as puppets in the hands of the culture of the place and time” (Stone 2006). We can resist and we can decide how we let outside influences change us.
Similar to everyone else in the world, many sociological forces have greatly impacted my life and shaped the person that I am today. Throughout Sociology 110, learning what elements in the population’s lives affect the way they live their lives allowed me to consider what has personally affected my own. The person I am today can attribute the sociological forces such my gender, my not-so close knit family, my family’s low socioeconomic status, and sexism in the family. There are plenty of other sociological factors that have considerably rendered my person, however, I believe that the ones I mentioned are the most important factors that manipulated not only how I live my life, but me as a person as well, into my current self.
Society and culture surround everyone at all times. It helps raise and shape the population into what it is from the moment a person is born to their death. It is a very powerful factor in the world. It can cause hatred and war but it can also cause love and acceptance. It affects our behavior, tolerance, and decisions. In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, both authors create characters who act in a manner that conforms to the cultural expectations of their time surrounding love for others, work and economical statues, and treatment of others, demonstrating that both men and women hide and ignore parts of themselves that do not coincide with cultural expectations.
Everyone believes something different. Many people believe society has a large impact on today’s world. Many people believe you should read a book by its cover and not allow any underclassmen into your life due to their class in the world. While today many people are not punished for what they have done, in the olden day in age, everyone of everyone was punished for every crime that wasn’t allowed. Society has changed so much through the years, it has helped and also harmed our small and very large communities greatly. The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, and Of Mice and Men are great ways to show how society has affected today’s day in age.
The culture of a community invariably determines the social structures and the formation of a society. Developed over time, culture is the collection of beliefs and values that a group of people maintain together. Culture is never constant, and thought to be continually renewed over years as new ideas and concepts become mainstream. It ranges from how people live, day to day topics for conversations, religion, and even entertainment. It is analogous to guidelines, or the rulebook of the said group of people. Society, on the other hand, emanates from the social structure of the community. It is the very institutions to which create a regulated and acceptable form of interaction between peoples. These values, ideals and traditions are created and become traditions that are then passed on. These traditions then come to be perceived as natural rather than cultural, which is often how media will display it and society unknowingly accepts.

In conclusion, we as a society have to realize that individuality goes much deeper than material things and that it is okay to be different. Conforming to what society feels you should do will not only be detrimental to our growth as humans but as a world community as well.
Of course, one can never truly escape from the influence of society. A person is born and raised with the beliefs and customs of society, and it will always be a part of someone and will always influence how one thinks, how one reacts, how one speaks, and how one acts. But one may try to supress that immediate thought, the product of society’s influence, and think and react according to one’s new set of ideas.
In so many ways society impacts our lives and put perceptions on how everyone should look and act. Everyday everyone, including myself, looks at these perceptions and cannot help but take something from them. I always try to keep my identity unique and cherish my values but every now and then it seems like I have changed. In someway that is always true but it is hard not to wonder how much change was due to social standards.

Technology is unavoidable in our modern lifestyle. You wake up, you use technology; you use technology while cooking, while eating, while driving. While you’re lying in bed before you fall asleep, you use technology, technology wakes you up in the morning. Is all the technology around you good for you, or is it harmful to your health? Was our society healthier or safer before all the advancements? So many questions and concerns about all of the technology we crave, but there are very few people who know the answers. Technology affects all parts of human life. It can create jobs, motivate people to get active, and assist people in learning, but this does not balance out that there are dangers that follow the use of technology.
Society is a constant changing idea, whether that change be from region to region or a period of time. People move through it without thinking what they really are doing. Often they do not realize how much pressure society places on one’s being. It is the basis of how a person forms their opinions, beliefs, and morals. The structure of behavior rests in the society one is raised in. People’s acceptance of one another and a desire to conform create a world where people are struggling to fit in. My family is who I have socialized most with since they were the first ever people I interacted with. Family has had a large influence over who I am today because they are the people who I learned almost everything from (primary socialization). The reason I have such high morals and values is because of my family. By observing and taking from their behavior I was able to form my own values through nurture. My uncle always smoked around the kids, including myself, when I was younger and I never liked the smell and now I associate that memory with cigarettes and it makes me not have any desire to smoke whatsoever.
