Learning how to make your foods last longer is a fantastic way to save money. It’s also smart way to prepare for the rainy day, as you never know when a disaster might struck and proper food is short to come by. But preserving food requires a bit of skill because you don’t want to end up storing food only to find out it has all gone bad. It’s important to pay attention to the do’s and don’ts of food preserving.
What is food preserving?
Before we examine how you should and shouldn’t preserve food, let’s clear what food preserving means in the firs place. When you are preserving food, you are essentially extending the food’s usability with methods including: freezing, canning, drying, dehydrating or converting it into something long-lasting.
Preserving food is possible with the help of everyday tools, such as jars, plastic bags and boxes. You generally need to either have a cold room or a freezer at hand, with most preservation methods also requiring the ability to store the item in a dark place and to possibly remove air from the container.
Do consider what method works the best for you, in terms of your capability and your taste buds. If you don’t have room for a freezer, then you might want to consider canning instead. On the other hand, if you can fit a large freezer to your home or you have a cool cellar, you might prefer this method over canning. The different options available are:

Although you can preserve almost anything to certain extend, some foods are definitely better for long-term storage. Here’s a few ideas for foods we recommend adding to your cupboards:
• Berries: all types – make jams, pickles, and chutneys
• Vegetables: broccoli, beans, potatoes, carrots, corn, mushrooms, etc. – freeze in small portions, can single ingredients, or dry as snacks
• Meat: all types – most meat is perfect for curing and salting, with fish excellent for canning
• Fruit: all types – make jams, chutneys, and dry as snacks
As mentioned above, you can also cook meals – even soups – and preserve them with canning or freezing.
With the above tricks and tips, you can turn food preservation into something fun and money saving. Preserving food is a great way to make your budget go further, but also to enjoy tasty meals no matter what happens in the world!
