Human Respiratory System
Our respiratory system is fundamental to our living. Without the use of our respiratory system and oxygen reaching all parts of our body we would not be able to function and parts of our body would start to die. It is so important that we maintain this system and keep it healthy. In this report we shall look into how the respiratory system is made up of cells and tissues, how it functions and the effects smoking can bring.
Cells are the smallest unit of matter within the human body. They live independently and come in all shapes such as star, square and elongated. Within the cell it functions much the same as the human organism in that it breathes reproduces and dies. There are two types of cells; Prokaryotic cells do not contain a nucleus and are found in bacteria and Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus and form human and plant cells.
Cell Structure and Organelles
The outermost part of the cell. It regulates the passage of molecules such as fats and proteins.
Jelly like substance in which the organelles float around in. Contains enzymes, amino acids and molecules needed for a cell to function. 90% is made up of water.
Known as the powerhouse of the cell it produces adenosine triphosphate (ATP) the mitochondrion is an energy carrier.
Tube like and aids cell division.
Shaped like a sac this organelle stores and transports the cells ingested materials such as water and waste products.
Contains enzymes which rid the cell of bacteria other dangerous waste and any organelles which are not functioning correctly.
