Analyzing the retail sales for the possible city involved in the new expansion report is another significant factor in figuring out which site would be best for Swifts’ Boutique. Not only do the retail sales in general need to be researched, but the retail sales pertaining specifically to the clothing stores also needs to be researched. To take it even further we will be looking at the overall expenditures for each county in just Apparel, and then taking it another step further looking into just Female Apparel. Then finally ending with the Women’s and Girls’ Clothing Statistics for each county. Table Nine below illustrates these statistics. In 2008, based on County information from Demographics USA, Washtenaw, the county in which Ann Arbor, MI resides, had Retail Sales totaling $4,792,486,000, of that total; $188,352,000 was from Clothing and Clothing Accessories Stores. Washtenaw also had annual sales of $749,074,000 for Just Apparel and $257,358,000 for exclusively just Female Apparel. Finally $155,768,000 in sales for just Women’s and Girls’ Clothing. The city of Lincoln, NE is in Lancaster County. The total Retail Sales for this county in 2008 was $4,373,796,000. Of that total $245,189,000 was from sales at Clothing and Clothing Accessories Stores. Just the Apparel section totaled at $490,988,000, and Female Apparel totaling at $169,705,000. Finally just Clothing for Women and Girls’ is totaling at $218,360,000. Dane County, Madison, WI’s county, had $8,705,755,000 in total Retail Sales. Dane County totaled $398,278,000 in the sales of Clothing and Clothing Accessories. Also in just Apparel they totaled $949,900,000 in sales and $332,915,000 in sales exclusively for Female Apparel. They’ll also want to determine the size of these rivals, and what their performance is within the market. Assessing popularity, as well as strengths and weaknesses of direct competitors will be helpful in determining how Eddie Bauer’s performance could match up against their competition, as well as how they might gain competitive advantage. I would suggest that they incorporate more diversity in their ads and campaigns to reach different ethnicities if they want to continue to expand. Also, in stores, particularly the Willow Grove, PA location, is very large and spacious. Upon entering the store it is primarily women’s apparel and accessories, as well as men’s. Maybe the company can incorporate more of its products in this location, to provide consumers with more of a product assortment.

For decades, America has been the fastest growing economy country in the world, and Detroit was one of the most leading populous city in the United States. Back in 1930, Detroit was the fastest growing city, but now is the fastest shrinking city with more than 100, 000 abandoned homes (Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady). Similarly, Bay Area economy was the envy of the nation with high employment rates and GDP growth like Detroit in the 1930s, and is currently suffering from losing jobs, residents, and status. Both Detroit and the Bay Area are single resource-based industries - where Detroit is manufacturing dominated, and Bay Area is high technology dominated. However, the Bay Area will not go bankrupt and become a ghost town in fifty years, because its high diversities in the economic opportunities are attracting people to stay and work here.
My company of choice for this report is Macy 's. 'The Magic of Macy 's ', as the company advertises it, has inspired me to shop there, take advantage of their incomparable discounts and great online shopping experience. Macy 's, Inc. is one of the largest department store chains in the United States of America. Macy 's manages stores under the Macy 's and Bloomingdale 's brands. Detroit was once the mecca for workers pursuing the American dream. In the early 1900’s an innovative inventor named Henry Ford brought mass production of the automobile to this area, turning Detroit into a beacon of opportunity and economic success for many. This Automotive Industry has been at the base of Detroit’s economy for decades; however, it’s not like it once was. During the 20th century the auto industry had many high and lows. Many factors lead to the recent downturn of this industry that led to mass layoffs and displaced workers, which had a negative impact on Detroit, as well as the United States economy.

Whenever we go out shopping or relaxing at malls, we actually don’t see or recognize any effects of malls as we mostly go there for these two reasons. Malls are an integral part in the lives of America. They are shopping centers that have created a lot of buzz in many writers. This is because we have more malls in America than high schools. Malls have received praises from people like James J. Farrell, Jon Pahl and George Lewis who view malls as not only shopping centers but also as places that provide a reflection of the American culture and serve as centers of pleasure and entertainment. In contrast, William Kowinski and David Gutterson criticize malls for just being an artificial environment that creates disorientation among American shoppers. In my opinion, malls are just magnificent commercial buildings that create a sense of false dreams and imagination.
