LOST is a popular American TV series that was first shown on the famous American Broadcasting Company ABC between the dates of September 2004 and May 2010. It consisted of six seasons. A popular and praised TV series, LOST has been ranked by critics among their all time top ten television shows ever made (Krukowski 1). It is about the survivors of a commercial airliner, Oceanic Flight 815, which crashed on a hidden island in the Pacific while flying from Sydney to Los Angeles. The TV series is popular in different cultures and countries, a success that is attributed to many reasons. Its collection of diverse crew, numerous romantic relationships, a number of themes including the wilderness life and the mainly island locations of acting makes it popular across different cultures. This paper explores these reasons in detail and how exactly they have contributed to the popularity of LOST, across many cultures and countries beyond the American culture.

In the article “TV’s Callous Neglect of Working- Class America” written by Noel Murray explains the modern day TV shows un-relatable plots to Americans today. Murray describes how shows in the ‘50s through the ‘90s were relatable to Americans and how they lived their lives. The TV shows then were able to get such great reviews because the jobs the actors had in the shows were average money making jobs. The characters are meticulously when it came to how they used the money they earned. However, as the years have passed, the shows that are on today are not as relatable to Americans. The shows express the fantasy, perfect life that everyone strives to have, but in reality, it is not possible for every family. The programs on today do not convey the difficulties that average Americans face each day, causing the shows to become more and more relatable to average TV viewers.
Reality shows sent a much-needed lifeline to the television networks industry. These shows have found a new way to bring much needed viewers, and even more important they brought in much needed money. The money came rolling into CBS after premiering Survivor, which brought in a profit of around $30,000,000 to the network. Even though Survivor is the must costly reality show, costing close to one million dollars to produce and hour of programming. In comparison to other shows, which cost far more like CBS’s series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” which cost over 1.6 million to produce per hour. With the amount of money coming in such large sums to networks have had to close monitor how much is being spent. Clearly’ the reality shows have brought in much needed assets to the flattering television networks.
Imagine, if you will, a time that seemed innocent... almost too innocent. Imagine a nation under whose seemingly conformist and conservative surface dramatic social changes were brewing, changes as obvious as integration and as subtle as fast food. And imagine, if you will, a radical television show that scrutinized, criticized, and most importantly, publicized these changes, making the social turmoil of a nation apparent to its post-world war, self-contented middle-class citizens. But what if this television show was not as it appeared? What if it masqueraded as simple science fiction, and did not reveal its true agenda until viewers took a closer look? Australian commercial television has imported American formats (Bell Phillip, ‘Television’). Even the Australian Logies are becoming Americanised. At the 2005 Logie awards, there were at least two American celebrity guests, CSI Miami actress …… was given a lot of attention at the Logies, because of her famous American celebrity status. The Logie awards which were supposed to be awarded to shows that are produced in Australia, this year awarded a Logie to the OC for the best overseas program. The influence of the American culture on Australian television was clearly evident at the Logies.

... for your life. If a woman wants to be a housewife who focuses on raising her children or a career woman, it is her choice ultimately. If a man wants to be equally involved in his career and family, it should be his choice too. It should not matter what the gender stereotype is and this show helps women and men believe that the individual feeling is often more important than the typical societal belief.

Their family may struggle to get through some problems and some of their gender roles do not meet the traditional way, but they always make it work the best they can (p.115). They are not judgmental, have values, and everyone love each other (p.34). I love that the characters do not always get along and everything is not perfect. When I am a little older, I want to adopt a few children and this show expresses to me a different perspective and objection of life growing up in the foster system with parents that are different (p.35). Postmodernism can be defined as a rejection of the idea that there are certain unequivocal truths or grand narratives (such as capitalism, faith or science) and as a belief that there are multiple ways of understanding anything, whether it be it culture, philosophy, art, literature, films, etc, or even television... Television reflects the mass-produced society we live in and certain shows exhibit many of the archetypes of postmodernism that have become prevalent in other art forms. Postmodernism can be useful for understanding contemporary television it can help us to relate to the ever-changing world we live in. Television shows like ABC’s Lost (ABC, 2004-2010) dabble in matters of intertextuality, questioning of grand narratives and, amongst others, a manipulation of time through use of flashbacks, flash-forwards and, uniquely to Lost, the flash-sideways.

The meaning of reality TV in American culture can differ from person to person. Overall, the purpose of reality TV is to provide entertainment, to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. At the end of every episode, the producers show a sneak preview of things that will take place in the next episode, which leaves the audience with a cliffhanger. In the sneak preview, the producers show a conflict that may arise, in hopes that the audience will continue to watch the show. After watching the sneak preview, the viewers develop a sense of anticipation and want to know what’s going to happen next. Reality TV is broken down into certain categories such as competition, entertainment, ect. In this essay, I’m going to be discussing The Amazing Race by using both a narrative and visual analysis.
This essay will examine my thoughts and those of David Sterrit on the critically acclaimed television show The Honeymooners. First, I will talk about the Honeymooners and it’s setting in postwar America. Secondly, the social and cultural issues the series portrayed. Next, would be the psychological perspective and the aesthetics of the show. Finally, the essay would conclude with my thoughts on how the Honeymooners were impacted by these aspects, but also how the show managed to leave a legacy in television today.
