In the modernist poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, T.S. Eliot chooses to criticize society’s deterioration as a result of industrial advancements, while exploring the idea that habitual acts, although unnoticed throughout most of life, may well end up being all there is to show for it when old age presents itself. Throughout the poem, Eliot pioneers themes which a hundred years later still remain greatly present in works of literature and art, Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche New York being a prime example.

When Caden’s behemoth of a play engulfs him as well as everyone and everything around him, he breaks and confesses, “I don 't know what I 'm doing”(Kaufman). Prufrock as well, although thought of as the very guide through the world that is The Love Song, admits, “I am no prophet [...] I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker [...] And in short, I was afraid”(Eliot 4). These two examples convey the message that life is very unpredictable, and often times out of the control of individuals. Coming from two characters who stand as ‘Synecdoches’ for all of humanity, their problems, regrets, hopes and dreams are no more different than the person to their right, or their bus driver, or dentist. Millicent embodies the idea when she tells Caden, “This is everyone’s experience. Every single one. The specifics hardly matter”(Kaufman). in, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, T. S Eliot uses the advancements of modern life to blame the decline of society onto. Eliot fears the change and shift in life that they might bring, while also resenting the past that such advancements will eventually leave behind. As well, he tries to portray the passing of time and the deterioration of the human body and mind, trying to find some meaning, or at least help others find meaning in the great chaos that each person
