As a kid you grow up listening and reading all these different stories and fairy tales. Some that later benefit your knowledge and way of life, and other that your parents just read to you so you can finally go to sleep for the night. I will say, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” was one of the few that my parents found wasn’t very effective because I enjoyed it. It was originally created by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in Germany in the nineteenth century. A vast majority of my English teachers used this piece to help to teach us how to analyze these poems and us some of the literary terms. The poem gave me the idea of a “childhood fairy tale” until I heard Anne Sexton’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” She gives a completely different look at the historical fairy tale and brings the females perspective of it. Sexton focuses on how we are brought up as children to believe that women are inferior to men. It kind of gives me the idea that maybe this how our society is possible be being portrayed. The story’s unusual darkness and violence of this version may surprise readers how Anne Sexton breaks down the real societal issues of why women are inferior to men. Anne Sexton’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” brings women to light. Violence, beauty, purity, and male dominance are more than just themes in this poem. They are real life societal issues that are leaving women behind in the dark to just be perceived as simple minded and not beautiful. Everything you thing you read that you think may be in our best interest is not always correct. These fairy tales that our children are hearing about to today are teaching them that women are all beauty and no brains and should be submissive to the male species. Sexton put in a lot of hard work to be able to tie together all the themes together to help see the big picture as a whole. The societal issues women faced back in time are still present today. Our children are being raised to perceive that women are inferior to men. This poem shows that a woman's purity, beauty, and intelligence are all referred to as “things”. Which makes them out to be worthless and lifeless and in need of men to fill their souls and spirits. At the end of the day these elements are the reason the male species is being portrayed as the all mighty strong man who above all dominance is leaving the simple minded beautiful women like Snow White inferior to them.
Modern-day feminists state that there are many repressed attitudes and fears which keep women in a kind of half-light, forcing them to subconsciously retreat from the full use of their minds and creativity (Dowling, 595). The archetypal Cinderella is often criticized by feminist critics for waiting for something external to transform her life (Abel, 192). Contrary to this assumption, passivity is not prevalent in the original Brothers’ Grimm tale. However, actions performed by women in the tale are often associated with darkness. It is this overpowering association with the color black and its implications that truly keep women in a “half-light” in the tale.

In summary, the account for a woman’s femininity is primarily encouraged by man. Wollstonecraft inspires readers as she debates the right for woman equality to man, with most, if not all females agreeing with her argument and powerful ideas. Thus it is possible to conclude that the influence of academic literature does complicate everyday contemporary understanding, as reality of the day has differing points of view in writing. Through the combination of enjambment stanzas, hyperboles, satire, and the overall mocking tone of the poem, Sexton brings to light the impractical nature of the story “Cinderella”. Not only does the author mock every aspect of this fairy tale, Sexton addresses the reader and adds dark, cynical elements throughout. Sexton’s manipulation of the well-known fairy tale “Cinderella” reminds readers that happily ever after’s are meant for storybooks and not real life.
In a society unbridled with double standards and set views about women, one may wonder the origins of such beliefs. It might come as a surprise that these ideals and standards are embedded and have been for centuries in the beloved fairy tales we enjoyed reading as kids. In her analytical essay, “To Spin a Yarn: The Female Voice in Folklore and Fairy Tales”, Karen Rowe argues that fairy tales present “cultural norms which exalt passivity, dependency, and self-sacrifice as a female’s cardinal virtues.” Rowe presents an excellent point, which can be supported by versions of the cult classics, “Cinderella” and “Snow White”. Charles Perrault’s “ The Little Glass Slipper” and the Brothers Grimm’s “ Snow White” exemplify the beliefs that females are supposed to be docile, dependent on the male persona and willing to sacrifice themselves. In many cases, when strong female characters are presented they are always contradicting in these characteristics, thus labeled as villainous. Such is the case of the Cinderella’s stepsisters in Perrault’s “Cinderella” and the stepmother in the Brothers Grimm’s “Snow White.” These female characters face judgment and disapproval when they commit the same acts as male characters. With such messages rooted in our beloved fairy tales it is no wonder that society is rampant with these ideals about women and disapprove of women when they try to break free of this mold.
As the world has transformed and progressed throughout history, so have its stories and legends, namely the infamous tale of Cinderella. With countless versions and adaptations, numerous authors from around the world have written this beauty’s tale with their own twists and additions to it. As the poem begins, Sexton starts with how the Prince and Cinderella are living happily ever after, but compromising the original naïve direction, she gives the poem a modern context bringing the reader back to reality. Thinking back to our childhood, we all remember hearing many kinds of fairy tales. Some of them inspired us others confused us, and most of them taught us valuable lessons. Through out centuries tales and stories have been used as a valuable tool to pass on our culture to new generations. There is a strong belief that these fairy tales mirror and influence society. All cultures interpret tales in their own unique way. They add and subtract various aspects of the tale to fit the needs of their particular society. The same tale in the United States is different from the tale told in Asia. A good example of tale evolution can be seen in one of the most famous tales ever told which is “Cinderella”. As a professor of women’s history Karol Kelley points out in her essay Pretty Woman: A Modern Cinderella “There are some 700 versions of Cinderella”.This fairy tale as many others has been changing for many years, and in recent years Cinderella has come under some criticism for its depiction of women’s roles in society.
Though the evils of the world may discourage us from reaching our full potential, fairytales such as Little Snow-White by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm teach us that good will always triumph over evil. As many tales of its kind, Little Snow-White uses a number of literary devices to attract a younger audience and communicate to them a lesson or moral that will remain with them throughout their lives. Since children have such an abstract stream of thought, it is vital to use language and devices that will appeal to them as to keep them interested in the story.
In the first opening scene, Snow White is referred to as a “lovely little princess.” In her first appearance, she is cleaning and looks as though she is in despair waiting to be saved. Snow White is portrayed as young, virginal, pretty, obedient and incapable of helping herself. This movie having been released in 1937, conveys what the “proper” gender roles of the time were. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, power is segregated between genders and even to this day, the stereotypical gender roles seen in this movie still hold some weight in our society.
