There are numerous of poems that have been written by different people throughout history, and each poem has a different impact on the reader by the selection of words and structure used. Three poems that differentiate in effect on the reader are, “Green Chile” written by Jimmy Santiago Baca, “Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone” by Wystan Hugh Auden, and “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe. Although the three poems were written by different authors and during different time periods, they invoke different reactions on the reader. Each poem poses a unique influence on the reader, and causes a different reaction whether it is sadness, joy, or confusion. The poems “Green Chile”, “Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone”, and “The Raven” use different structure, literature features, and tone to invoke different feelings on the reader. “Green Chile” written by Jimmy Santiago Baca is structured in free verse. The lines of the poem don’t rhyme, instead, the author tells a story in which he relives a pleasant experience. The poem is also a personal experience, in which the author lost someone he deeply loved, this intimate experience allows the reader to make a close connection with the author. The tone of the poem is consistent from beginning to end, which signifies the author’s emotion is unchanging, and presents a deep sense of dark and hollowness in the author’s heart. Phrases such as “cut off the telephones” (1), “prevent the dog from barking” (2), and “silence the pianos” (3) suggests that there is a deep stage of depression that the death of his lover has brought upon him.
