Childhood Memories
Our childhood memories always remain with us. These memories can be either pleasant or distressing. For certain reason unpleasant childhood memories are easier to recall than the pleasant ones. In the poem “Zimmer in Grade School”, Paul Zimmer illustrates a boy’s failure in grade school that has left him with self-doubt and lack of confidence. The boy mentioned in the poem is none other than Paul Zimmer. As a child, Zimmer mentioned his insecurities and failures that lead him to be disobedient. I relate to “Zimmer in Grade School” because I remember having intimidating experiences and frights in grade school that left me with low self-esteem like Zimmer.
As a child, my grade school experience was not the finest. I completed my grade school in India. Like Zimmer, grade school was a harsh reality of my life. Zimmer in the poem states, “In grade school I wondered why I had been born to wrestle in the ashy puddles” (1-3). Similar to Zimmer, I used to hide, and sit all the way in the back. In spite of hiding, everyone knew who I was, a lonely girl who had failed herself and her parents. The girl who could have done well in grade school, if she was given a chance. Oh, how I wish this was a horrifying nightmare, however this is my reality. Bullying is a major problem in our society that occurs beyond grade school. Although due to bullying, my grade school and middle school experience was not positive, I truly learned something from it. I learned to face the problems instead of running away from them like a coward. Despite being an adult, I still face bullies at work in form of co-workers, patients, and managers. Have you or someone you know been bullied? Your answer is probably yes. So was Jodee Blanco, the author of Please Stop Laughing At Me… One Woman’s Emotional Story. Starting in 5th grade up until high school graduation, she was tormented by her classmates, getting little or no help from authority. Even her parents began to believe it was her fault. She understands what it feels like to be bullied and wrote the book as something other victims can relate to. She also wrote it to show people how bad bullying really is and get them to understand that it shouldn’t be dismissed as a normal part of growing up and allowed to happen. Something should be done to prevent kids from going through this. That is her main point in this book. The main idea of this book is Ms. Blanco sharing her experiences experiences of being bullied through much of her adolescent life to show people the horrors of bullying and that it shouldn't be allowed to continue.
Whoever may been a victim of bullying or are the bullies was once a kid and they believed in something with all their heart, maybe it was that they didn’t like how smart you are, your clothes, or how you talk. It’s how they feel towards you to make them not like you. And they use to have friends, friends they can hang out with, talk to and just be these themselves with, but when they started being bullied for being different they’re friends not hanging out with, talking to them and don’t want to be friends with them because they’re afraid to get bullied just like just like that person. And it’s hard for people like that to survival if they’re just getting picked on by students or adults. Bullying has become a major problem facing the United States today. The American Psychological Association reports that roughly 40% to 80% of children are involved in bullying on some level during their time in school. (APA, 2014) The magnitude of the problem can be observed in the statistics. In the United States, a total of 4,080,879 children between the ages of five and 18 have been the victims of bullying compared to 3,892,199 who have reported that they have engaged in bullying someone else. Additionally, 851,755 said that they have been both the victim and the bully. That's a whopping 8,824,833 people in the United States that have been involved in bullying behavior on one level or another. (High, B., 2000 Census)

But there are some I shall refer to. For the “parents” or “teachers” who believe that bullying is there to make someone stronger or more emotionally fit. For the “Kids” who believe that bullying is a day to day normal thing. For the “victims” who believe Bullying will make you strong, well let me say, it will not. For instance, Adults who say it will make One stronger, It is opposing my view because I would rather want it to stop it than to let it be a ongoing issue in society. As for Kids who think it’s good to be bullied and to experience the whole reality, it goes against my belief because these are opinions about you in a negative way. Victims who also believe that this is a way to become stronger, is opposing my view as well since they 're willing to accept this act as a part of their life and to make an excuse for themselves for not stopping it. Now, where’s the evidence of the solution? there is none unfortunately, Bullying is too big and vast to even say if there is a solution to it. There’s one but that takes time, risks, and avoidance. In my old elementary school, Shipley’s Choice, I used to be bullied. Though people still try to push me around, I learned not to pay my mind to them. Shipley’s Choice Elementary school is considered to be on the higher end of middle-class public schools, with all its snotty brats, it felt like Hell. This situation began around second to fourth grade. There was a lot of hatred towards me because I was and kind of still am, a weird person. I had long hair and acted like a weird, modern-day 2010s kid. I was essentially before my time. However, people used to pick on me, call me horrid names, and even hit me! I was depressed, hiding behind a fake smile. Some of my former bullies are now some of my closer friends. But, I was like an outstretched rubber band about to snap. Luckily I never did. I had expected the school to help me, but I was the only one in a major amount of trouble, as I verbally retaliated.
Poems are often designed to express deep feelings and thoughts about a particular theme. In Theodore Roethke’s poem, My Papa’s Waltz, and Ruth Whitman’s poem, Listening to grownups quarreling, the theme of childhood is conveyed through their details, although we can neither see a face nor hear a voice. These poems are very much alike in their ideas of how their memories pertain to the attitudes of their childhood; however, the wording and tones of the two poems are distinct in how they present their memories. The two poems can be compared and contrasted through the author’s use of tone, imagery, and recollection of events; which illustrate each author’s memories of childhood.
There are people in today’s society that have this attitude that if it does not concern them they will overlook the situation and this is not the kind of attitude we need when it comes to helping others. It is not okay to play with people’s lives, they work hard to get where they are for some to come and try to take it all away. Dzurec, Kennison, & Albataineh (2014) state, “In places of work, bullying ensues as an ongoing communication process (Einarsen et al., 2011; Zapf, 1999), typically involving bullies and their targeted victims in series of uncomfortable, primarily interpersonal encounters that extend over periods of 6 months or more (Baillien & DeWitte, 2009; Baillien, Neyens, DeWitte, & DeCuyper, 2009; Salin, 2003)” (p.282).
...e bullying as a serious issue, just as schools do, it will continue to be a costly and sometimes deadly fact of everyone’s daily lives. Using another’s back might get you there, but it can be a slippery slope. “To learn and apply is to raise ones skills; one is upgrading oneself. Learning, self-cultivation and self-improvement is important in the workplace and in doing business.” (Patrick Low, K., & Mohd. Zain, A., 2012)
Bullying has been around for decades and yet it is still a reoccurring problem, and it is only getting worse. The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. Eight years earlier, only 14 percent of that population said they had experienced bullying(Ollove,2014). There are two types of bullying the direct form and indirect form, in the direct form the victim receives physical harm example kicking pushing shoving. In the indirect form the victim receives emotional or mental harm by name-calling, rejection, gossip, threats, or insults(Green,2007). Bullying has always been a problem within the past century and has become an epidemic. However, because of social media people are becoming more aware of the issues associated with bullying and how it has become a trend in today’s society. You turn on the news and you are hearing about kids being bullied and the end result is suicide. Bullying is occurring worldwide. Not only is it happening in our schools and social networks, but also in the work place. The various types of bullying that exist and the attempt to entirely eliminate them is not achievable because of individual and environmental factors.
Bullying is a major issue in schools and is a factor in fitting in. Almost all students in high school either have been bullied or have bullied someone. Bullying is something that is not something new and is actually something that society continues to face. Over the years, bullying has been looked at as being so ordinary in schools that it is continuously overlooked as an emanate threat to students and has been lowered to a belief that bullying is a part of the developmental stage that most young children will experience then overcome (Allebeck, 2005, p. 129). Not everyone gets over the extreme hurt that can come as an effect from bullying, for both the bully and the victim. Because of this, we now see bullying affecting places such as the workplace, social events and even the home. “Researchers have conducted that at least 25% of all children will be affected by bullying at some point during their school years, and many of these children miss significant numbers of school days each year owing to fear of being bullied” (Bray, M., Kehle, T., Sassu, K. (2003). Bullying has become a major problem for our students and our schools. Children are missing educational time and are losing self-confidence because they are afraid or intimidated by other students. We, as teachers, need to reduce bullying in our schools and prevent bullying from being a reoccurring issue in the lives of our students in order for them to learn, grow and develop. Our goal as teachers should be “to reduce as much as possible-ideally to eliminate completely- existing bully/victim problems in and out of the school setting and to prevent the development of new problems” (Olweus, D.
