Advancement of Technology and Science and its Influence on Science Fiction Novels
The rapid pace of technology and the advancement of scientific
understanding in the past one hundred years are at the backbone for the
distinctly twentieth century genre -- science fiction. Such rapid advancement
in these fields of technology have opened up literally worlds of possibilities
for the future. One hundred years ago the possibility of simply flying from
city to city may have seemed nothing more than a distant futuristic dream to
most. While a mere sixty years later the impossible was achieved -- a human
being on the moon. Since technology has brought as much change as it has in the
past one hundred years the next hundred should be entirely incomprehendable to
us. Who knows what to expect? "The modern discoveries and applications of
Science throw deeply into the shade the old romances and fanciful legends of our
boyhood" (James 8) observes James. Technology has made what was once thought
impossible, plausible and weather or not technology is directly incorporated
into a science fi ction story as an obvious vehicle, the author knows that it is
always present in the mind of the reader. It is this plausablilty of what
conventionally should not be acceptable that has led to science fiction's
increasing popularity over the years. As James explains, "much sf is concerned
with the future and with the possibilities presented by scientific and
technological change" (James 3). Truly, humans exploring and even colonizing
other worlds, the plot of many a science fiction novel, has to many become
inevitable. The successful series of Apollo moon landings in the 1960's and
the knowledge that we already possess the technology to send humans to other
worlds leads many to believe that it is only a matter of time. Even such a
notably respectable news source as Newsweek has detailed the future maned
missions to Mars (September, 23 1996). When I look forward to the future I can
hardly imagine the changes that will occur as a result of new discoveries in
science and new technologies. With so m any possibilities for the future,
science fiction is able to capitalizes on this by showing the audience entirely
new worlds and alternatives to our own.
Technology presented in science fiction stories most commonly serves a
very important role in the stories plausablilty to the audience. While this
does not mean that technology is necessarily the focus of such stories it is
often used as the vehicle for which such alternative and wonderous events occur.

Throughout the book, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, dependency on technology becomes a relevant topic. In the novel, Bradbury depicts that people are obsessed with their technology and have become almost completely dependent on it. Characters such as Mildred exist in today’s modern world and show a perfect example of how society behaves. In today’s society, people use their technology for just about everything: from auto correct to automatic parallel parking; as time goes by people do less manually and let their appliances do the work.

Gregor Mendel was born into a German family, as a young man Mendel worked as a gardener and studied beekeeping. In his later life Mendel gained his fame as the founder of the modern science of genetics. The research that was his claim to fame was his pea plant experiment. Mendel looked at seven different characteristics of the pea plants. For example with seed colors when he bred a yellow pea and green pea together their offspring plant was always yellow. Though, in the next generation of plants, the green peas reemerged at a 1:3 ratio. With our world progressing so quickly in science and technology it is fascinating to look back at the literature that was the inspiration for these advances. It is strange that this genre, filled with such outlandish plot lines and characters, could influence the real world. In a way it’s beautiful. When these brilliant minds of mankind are able to grab an idea from the fictional world and work together to make it a reality. The argument on the debate on whether or not the academic grading system is fair or not, isn’t something that is discussed too often. We have come to accept that the current grading system is the norm and that it is something that is unchangeable. To question the fairness of grading in this debate, isn’t on how it was adopted, but rather on how much of a student’s progress is up for interpretation. Francis Galton took Mendel’s discoveries further by studying multifactoral inheritance and discovering ‘blending traits’, also known as continuous variation. With these traits, involvement of a wide range of genetic and environmental factors results in the creation of wide-ranging genotypes.
Cry, the Beloved Country is such a controversial novel that people tend to forget the true meaning and message being presented. Mendel’s experiments in his monastery garden provided future geneticists with the basic principles of hereditary through the experimentation in both hybrid and pure bred pea plants, which he found to follow specific patterns in their offspring. The choice to use peas was because of their distinct varieties and their ability to produce offspring quickly and the ability to easily regulate fertilization simply with the use of a paintbrush. Science and Technology has been around from the beginning of time. It evolved from the everyday efforts of people trying to improve their way of life. Throughout history, humankind has developed and utilized tools, machines, and techniques without understanding how or why they worked or comprehending their physical or chemical composition. Before we go any further a definition has to be given for both Science and Technology because they are both different in their own right even though the two are almost indistinguishable. According to the Oxford Dictionary Technology can be defined as the knowledge or use of the mechanical arts and applied sciences, while Science can be defined as the branch of knowledge involving systematized observation and experiment. Science can be further divided into three separate categories; Pure, Applied and Natural Sciences. In addition technology is often defined as applied science, it is simply the application of scientific knowledge to achieve a specific human purpose, however, historical evidence suggests technology is a product of science.
