In the narrative “Incidents of a Slave Girls” by Harriet Jacobs the author tells a compelling story. This is not only a compelling story but a story that holds many tails of her life. The Harriet Jacobs story is told through a young slave named Linda Brent. The tails of her unfortunate events hit close to home. Harriet Jacobs or should I say Linda Brent braveness, stride to survive and loyalty along with making a political statement is something I look up to can identify with. Throughout the story there were events that illustrated her characteristics listed above. For example, when she told her slave owner Doctor Flint she should be allowed to marry who she desires or thought was fit for her. This shows all the qualities of braveness,
Other slaves would never speak to their master in such a way whether they were attacked by them or not. Linda examples that she felt that she still had something to love this shows her loyalty to herself because she isn’t giving up on her dreams and is willing to fight for what she loves. Linda was very smart she got a letter sent to Doctor Flint from New York so she could make him believe she was there. Again this all shows her loyalty to herself and stride to do anything to survive. The author writes “ye happy women, whose purity has been sheltered from childhood who has been free to choose the objects of your affection, whose homes are protected by law, do not judge the poor desolate slave girl too severely! If slavery had been abolished, I , also, could have married the man of my choice; I could have had a home shielded by the law; and I should have been spared the painful
She had to fight and never stop fighting to get what she knew she deserved freedom. She wrote “I feel that the slave woman ought not to be judged by the same standard as others." I agree with this passage because like many women in that time, Linda was judged in every way someone could be judged and the worst part about it was she wasn’t allowed to defend herself. In my country women and men of darker skin were the help and were treated a lot like Linda was treated many of them were Haitians. Those of lighter skin owned land plantations of many varieties. My great great grandfather owned slaved from Haiti and he treated them fairly from what I was told. But, people from his circle didn’t understand why he treated them like people rather than property. My grandmother told us this story so we could understand that even because others treat people wrong doesn’t mean we had to. Moreover, Linda talked about wishing death upon her child. I understand true understand why she would wish that. Many may judge her because of that thought but even so, many mothers would wish they didn’t have to raise children in such horrid circumstances. Linda Brent spent seven years in a box (the attic) had to be unbearable but, not as unbearable as being under Doctor Flint’s control. Physically being restraint played a tow on Linda but psychologically she couldn’t be freer. I see some of myself in Linda Brent her canning ability and determination to
