The film Jindabyne, is a story about death, marriage, and race in an Australian town in New South Wales called Jindabyne. In the film, four men go fishing, and one of them discovers the dead body of a young indigenous girl. Instead of reporting what they found to the police immediately, they decide to stay and continue fishing. They decide that there is nothing they could do for her, so they tie her legs to a tree and continue with their fishing, reporting the death only when they return home. After they are done with their weekend of fishing and report the incident, conflict starts, as the men are criticized for not respecting the dead. Through the story of the town’s reaction to the four fishermen’s response to the dead girl, the movie shows Australia to be fragmented and divided over white-indigenous relations.

On October 14th, 2016 in class we watched “Two Spirits” by Lydia Nibley. Basically the film explored the cultural context behind a tragic and senseless murder of the main character. Fred was part of an honored “Navajo” youth who was killed at the age of sixteen by a man who bragged to his friends that he was nothing but a “fag”. While walking home from a carnival he was chased by one of his friends. Once his friend caught up to Fred, he pulled him down from a mountain and smashed his head with a heavy rock. Fred laid there for five days straight where two young boys found his body lying there. He was labeled as a “two-spirit” who was possessed of balancing masculine and feminine traits. Throughout the story’s progression, Blackwood secretively becomes involved in a friendship and agreement with the Aboriginals who migrated to stay nearby ‘his’ home. Blackwood explains how they came to the agreement: “They come down, see… tell me to bugger off… [They] had their bloody spears up ready…give them some victuals. But they wasn’t having none… they let me stay. Made it real clear- stay on the beach,” (pg.215). Soon after Blackwood explains his confrontation with the Aboriginals, a voice called out from the lagoon. “[It was an Aboriginal woman, and] Blackwood was speaking in her own tongue. [Blackwood’s] words were slow and clumsy, but Thornhill could see the woman listening and understanding… I find them quiet and peaceable folk, Blackwood said,” (pp.216-7). This acceptance and hospitable relationship between Blackwood and the Aboriginals, shows the audience that Blackwood made the decision to make a comfortable relationship with the land owners. It is evident that Blackwood has changed his perspective on the Aboriginals through the contradiction of his confrontation, in which he uses words such as “bloody [and] bugger” to show that he did not feel welcome near or around them; and his agreement and “understanding” friendship in which words such as “peaceable” are used to show that they have a quiet, enjoyable relationship. Before we look at whether James Moloney effectively uses characterisation to convey Aboriginal issues we must look at the issues themselves. In Dougy, the issue of black and white prejudice is strongly present in the plot. The stereotyping of Aborigines and white Europeans play an important role in the events and the outcome of the story, as is individuality and the breaking of the stereotypes. The book also touches on the old Aboriginal superstitions that are still believed in by some today, though one of such superstitions plays an important role in creating the mood of the resolution.
