I chose to do my paper on the movie, For Colored Girls, by Ntozake Shane (2010). In the movie For Colored Girls, I thought about all the Tangies who have not been professionally treated for their childhood rape. It is not an easy subject to talk about. The victims sometimes hide their emotions for years. Sexual abuse on a child is vulgar and according to Martin (2010), it is considered maltreatment and should be reported to authorities. Tangie knew her attacker, in fact he lived with them. He was a caregiver who was supposed to protect her. She held a lot of anger towards her mother because she felt that at least her mom should have protected her. The reason I feel that way is because if she would have got involved with Child Protective Services (CPS) at an early age, her signs and symptoms of abuse might have surfaced. The CPS would have performed the necessary steps to remove the children from the home. Tangie would have received the help she needed. My hypothesis then is, if society would get involved and address abuse first than paperwork, children would be helped in a timely manner. It is the CPS duty to protect the child from harm and the caregiver’s duty to report harm (Martin, 2010). While it seems that Martin (2010) feels that substandard care in a child’s home is connected to community and poverty. I feel that they place a part in sexual abuse, but is not the whole picture. There are some underlying mental issues that causes a grown person to want to hurt a child. I will also say that maybe some abuse in the abuser’s life created this problem. Aminata Diallo is an eleven years old African girl, when her life changes completely, as she goes from a beloved daughter to an orphan that is captured and enslaved. Aminata is shown in the novel Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill as a strong young protagonist that is able to survive the odyssey around the world first as a slave and later as a free activist agent of the British. In the book, her various stages of her life are always connected with the clothes that she is wearing or the lack of clothes and show the degree of dehumanization that accompanies slavery.

Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented” (“Elie Wiesel Quote”). Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow, which discusses criminal justice and its role in mass incarceration, promotes a similar idea regarding silence when America’s racial caste system needs to be ended; however, Alexander promotes times when silence would actually be better for “the tormented.” The role of silence and lack of silence in the criminal justice system both contribute to wrongly accused individuals and growing populations behind bars.
In the article “ The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander, highlights the racial dimensions of the War on Drugs. She argues that federal drug policy unfairly targets communities of color, keeping millions of young, black men in a cycle of poverty and behind bars. She claims that racism is not dead and the Jim Crow laws still exist only now in modern form. Although, Alexander may have some interesting facts, I do not agree with her completely. Communities of color, whether it be black or brown make themselves a target. After all, if someone partakes in a crime, shouldn’t he or she have to suffer the consequences?
Junot Diaz wrote “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie in 1996” (Diaz 97), but before we go more into the story lets know more information about Junot Diaz. Junot Diaz was born in “Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on December 31, 1968” (Gradesaver). He lived in the Dominican Republic area until the age of seven, then was later sent to America with his mother and siblings to be closer to their father due to working in the states. Junot and his family were not wealthy, they “Lived in a poor part of New Jersey populated primarily by Dominicans” (Gradesaver). For being in a poor immigrant that did not stop him from attending college. He received his Bachelor’s degree from “Rutgers University in 1995” (MacArthur Fellow Program), and majored in “History and Literature” (Gradesaver). Junot became a writer because he had a passion to write from the “Lives lived between cultures” (MacArthur Fellow Program) and he wanted people to see how difficult it was for him to adjust living in the United States. Not only that, but the “Many challenges of the immigrant life” (MacArthur Fellow Program). Diaz writings are known to as a “Mix of Spanish and English” (MacArthur Fellow Program) in his texts. In the story “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie” by Junot Diaz, the main character pretends that he is experienced with all kinds of girls, but it is easy to see that he is instead an insecure teenage boy trying to find himself. In this story the teenage boy named Yunior walks the reader through exactly how to successfully go on a date and handle a girl of any race. The teenage boy telling the story speaks as though he is a player, a young man who is good at manipulating women, while in reality he is really a young boy trying to fit in and figure himself out. Although Yunior acts like he is a player, it is easy to tell from his actions that this is not who Yunior truly is.

From the first three syllables “First of all,” the author gives a sense of a story being told. I enjoyed reading your post. I agree with you that those who commit sexual assaults may have been sexually abused at one time or another. You had mentioned in your post that “sexual violence is an extreme case of deviant behavior”. However, not only is this act deviant, but it is also a criminal act. As we have learned in discussion 5.1, all criminal acts are deviant; however, not all deviant behavior is a criminal act (“Sociology Central Teaching,” 2010).
Child abuse is a social problem in America that has many contributed factors. Factors that contribute to child abuse and neglect includes poverty, divorce, substance use, lack of education, stress due to unemployment, mental health issues, teenage parent, and a history of child abuse in the family. It took decades for physicians to conclude that parents have been violently assaulting their children. Child abuse, child labor, juvenile delinquency, and similar social questions historically were ethical and moral problems, not strictly medical ones. (Helfer, Kempe, & Krugman, 1997). In 1962, the Journal of American Medical Association published “The Battered-Child Syndrome.” The article transformed society’s views and dates the rediscovery of child abuse as a social problem. Following this article, the U.S. Children’s Bureau adopted the first laws mandating physicians to report any suspicions of abuse and neglect to the police or child welfare. By 1974, some 60,000 cases were reported. In 1980, the number exceeded one million (Myers J. E., 2004).
There needs to be better laws that are in place when it comes to child abuse and neglect. If there was a better definition of Child abuse it might knock the statistics down a little bit. Some families do not think what they are doing to their child is ‘abuse’, because that’s how they were raised. If we as a society made a better definition of what abuse is, and brought more awareness to it then hopefully it would help it not occur so much. Also, another major problem that was touched upon in the movie is the fact that the ‘system’ just wanted to put her back in care with her. The social worker was not trying to really solve the issue between Apple’s mom and her; she was just trying to do what ever was easiest on her job. Something that should be done in the world we are living in today is to make sure that victims of abuse are being treated as victims, and not the problem. If the social worker would of done her job right, and followed the Childs Best Interest law, then the social worker would of seen that putting Apple back into an abused drug home was not what was in her best interest. Some people might argue that June (Agnes’ mom) has parental rights, but I think that is where the real problem lies. The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, defines child abuse as a failure to act as a parent or caregiver which results in physical/emotional harm, sexual abuse, and in some cases death. There are many different types of child abuse such as emotional, physical, neglect, and sexual. With each type of abuse there are warning signs you can spot before it is too late. When a child is abused there is a huge possibility that it can cause them to have many long term effects.
