I picked the stories “Wreck” by Scott Snyder and “A Temporary Matter” by Jhumpa Lahiri’s. The reason why I choose these stories is because they are both very well written and have great meanings behind them. Every author writes a story for a reason, that reason could be to teach us a moral lesson, tell their own stories or just to entertain. The reason why “Wreck” was written is to teach us a lesson about love, that not every love is the love of your live. And the reason behind “A Temporary Matter” is to teach us not to give up on the other person. It tells you a very sad story about a couple. Even though these stories have a great tale, the way the stories are written has a great effect on the reader. Both of these stories were written in …show more content…
Symbolism plays a big role in the story, it’s a hidden connection that the reader has to find. Symbolism plays a great part in the story.in “Wreck” the symbolism is defined by the salt that is in the story. The incident starts when he sees an eleven-year-old black kid in his kitchen trying to make pop corns, but he had put so much salt that it won’t pop. The reason why he put a lot of salt in it is because the kids were given salt less food at the camp. Wade gets really scared to see the kid because he didn’t like to see change. He was afraid of change and unexpected things. He always just wanted to be by himself and just stay with what he had. But at the end of the story when Grace broke his heart and all the kids were leaving. Then he saw Patty sitting next to her with a black salt rock in her. This tike Wade wasn’t scared of the Patty or any unexpected guest. He actually took a bit of that salt rock and that burned his neck. This tells us that Wade is now ready for change and he also knows that something that change is going to hurt just like how that salt burned his neck. The symbolism in “A Temporary Matter” is the candle light. Those candle light represents hope that everything between Shoba and Shukumar gets back together as it was. They were very happy before marriage but after the death of that baby they haven’t been the same. They barely talk to each other and avoid seeing each other for the most part. But ever since the power has gone, it has forced them to have dinner together in the dark and by having a confession to each other they are basically getting to know each other again. The last day of the power shortage Shoba confessed that she wanted to move out but when Shukumar told her that he was there to see the baby she started crying and felt bad about her
I had a few of the excerpts that I enjoyed but one of my favorites was Caring Makes Us Human by Troy Chapman. Just the title had me interested because I am someone who cares about other no matter what they have done in their past. This specific excerpt talks about how prisoners started taking care of a cat and felt grace. These prisoners have done some bad things to go to prison yet they can take care of this helpless animal and treat him like a king. Even the guard joined in or enjoyed watching the prisoners just simply talking to each other while petting the cute cat. They are the perfect example of what we should be as humans. Caring for people and things is what makes us human and a lot of people do not understand that yet. Everyone needs
They were not committed to each other or in love in the first place. During the game they played, the feeling they had was getting more distant by the day. Shoba and his wife were starting to see that they really did not respect each other as a person.
“The Landlady” and “Tell Tale Heart” are both stories that are easy and fun to read. Both stories are suspenseful that draws you into the book with the want to read more, these stories can be strange and creepy but at the end it will be worth the read. Both of these stories end with a cliffhanger which allows you to use your imagination of how the story would end. These two stories are both short stories which is only a few pages long. “Tell Tale Heart” and “The Landlady are good stories with the perfect amount of suspense that makes you want to read
Paula Vogel’s play, How I Learned to Drive, artistically tackles the disturbing issue of incestual pedophilia. The play’s protagonist Li’l Bit narrates the action as she goes through her memory of specific events. Much like stream of consciousness, her narration does not lead chronologically to scenes in her past. Rather it jumps back and forth between the present and different points in her life. She tells of her memories of youth and her sexual and emotional relationship with her Uncle Peck. Rather than simply telling about her experiences, though, Li’l Bit shares her memories through vignettes which show the audience her role in the affair within the context of learning to drive (Greene 425).
Symbolism is strongly represented through Kaplan’s short story. The symbols represented are the ocean, the killing of the doe and the woods. Andy saw the ocean for the first time at the Jersey Shore and is awfully frightened of the ocean since. She believes the ocean to be a huge vastness that constantly moved, keeps shifting and kept things
In Hemingway's, "Hills Like White Elephants" and deMaupassant's "The Necklace", the couple faces a crisis. In each story the couple handles the situation in different ways, which caused one couple to suffer for a very long time and the other, due to the choice that they have made, gave them a better life.
There is a never ending list of what makes some people amazing story tellers. Some writers have vast imaginations, other writers use the lives of others in their stories and other writers use their lived experiences in order to write moving works of art. Most books, works of poetry and short stories that revolve around lived experiences share a common theme of love, hate or both. As these are emotions that all humans share, However, there are some stories that have far more unique. Stories like “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway. Both O’Brien and Hemingway come from two completely separate walks of life but were both able to write stories using the same theme of emotional and physical
Out of the three wonderful narratives given, the best one is “Stepping Into the Light” by Tanya Savory. While “Shame” by Dick Gregory is an interesting read, it is the weakest out of the bunch. The story had no clear setting, to many extra details, and a lengthy exposition. “I Became Her Target” by Roger Wilkins was a better executed story, even though it still had some flaws. This piece lacks any figurative language, but it was to the point and had clear organization. Thus, Tanya Savory’s piece was the best. It was easy to follow, used a constant symbol, and used some stories from others to make her point. So using narrative styles and elements in the best way, Tanya Savory wrote the better story.
What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. It is a story that explores all
Many define drama to be a literary work that is to be performed in front of an audience. But to truly define drama one must comply with its themes in order to understand it fully. Drama is a form of art that is visually presented. It displays key characteristics of human emotions to give deeper meaning to what is being presented. Sometimes drama brings out what a person is truly feeling through a tragedy play or a play portraying good fortune. Drama plays are sometimes taken out of real life instances to extend the controversy of the event or elevate the excitement of the situation. Much like in Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles”, where a woman is being put on trial for killing her husband. Trifles are small insignificant things that can be ignored. Women are being ridiculed in this drama due to their lack of voice in society; however their superiority is shown through their keen eye for evidence. Symbolism in this play acts as a precursor to predestined events that take place. It can be observed by looking at anything that has specific significance to a scene, which Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters methodically point out. The unfinished quilt, the strangled bird, and fruit are the symbols that give insight what really happened between Mr. and Mrs. Wright, and what went wrong during their marriage to result in such a dreadful end.
We have all read interesting, touching stories in our lifetime. I have read a few, myself. The one that really sticks out in my mind is, The Unquiet Death of Robert Harris by Michael Kroll. This story left me filled with emotions, opinions, and questions.
All through the semester, we read numerous short stories, and every one of them had some sensational
...e same home, As a result Shukumar loses work time when Shoba is home. After the loss of their child, this couple really fell apart. The reader can interpret this as the couple got together to reproduce and when that failed they had nothing left. Considering how recent this was it is surprising that the couple is already over the death of the child. The couple is not completely over the death of the child, but they aren’t still grieving and only are upset when it is brought up.
For my book I chose to read The Body by Stephen King. This novel is about four young boys taking a journey to find a body somewhere in the woods that is at the county line. This story is about more than just four boys going on an adventure its about them becoming closer to each other and learning real life lessons along the way. The four boys are all going into their first year of middle school so this is a time in their life when they learn things that will help them in life.
I choose to read the book “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker. The book talks about the life of an African-American lady by the name of Celie that lived in the southern United States in the late 1930s. It addresses the numerous issues that included the low ranking of American social culture. In the book it talks about how she wrote books to God because the father she had would beat her and rape her. He also got her pregnant and then she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Her father end up taking the baby shortly after birth.
