Vanishing of the Bees is a documentary film that tells the story of agriculture and what it means when the bees disappear. Bees are necessary for pollination for a third of the food we eat, without them we wouldn’t even be able to have honey. “Pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma. The goal of every living organism, including plants, is to create offspring for the next generation. One of the ways that plants can produce offspring is by making seeds” (What is Pollination?, n.d.). The bees are hardworking and work together to get their job done in the hive. The beekeepers knew they had to figure out what was going on. Something interesting about the land where the hives would be is that farmers used to grow many different things on their farm such as corn and sunflowers. Now it’s more common for a farmer to just have sunflowers or just have corn on their land. The farmers began to spray their crops with a deadly chemical against the pests. The pesticide is bad for the bee because it can mess with their nervous system or immune system. Pesticides lead to dead bees which lead to a drop in the population of bees. The pesticides didn’t only affect bees, the pesticides also affect and put hummingbirds, bat, and butterflies at risk. Once the pesticides were banned from France, the bees started to flourish and be okay again. After this whole situation of the vanishing of the bees, the organic beekeeper group was made up of 34,000 people. I think that organic is just the way to go to keep everyone safe from the pesticides. To help raise the awareness of the disappearing of the bees, media outlets were talking about it. Commercials mentioned ways to help save the bees by even having your own gardens for the bees to pollinate from. Recently, the company Burt’s Bees has created a campaign to help bring the bees back. They will plant wildflowers for every tweet that drops the letter “b” and to buy a limited edition chap stick.
