Huckleberry Finn Final Essay Huck Finn is the main character for the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This young boy started off as an immature, trouble maker, and an unrespectable teenager. Huck did not act his age in the beginning of the novel. He eventually had to change but it takes time in order for someone to change or “grow up”. Towards the end of the book, Huck shows that he has changed and become a different but better person. He becomes a responsible boy with different ideas and thoughts about others. Huck comes of age with the help of his father figure, Jim who teaches him how to be responsible, to know what is right from wrong, change his thoughts about slavery, and also with the help of Mary Jane who helps him realize that lying is bad. Huck was desperate for a father figure. He needed someone to lead Mary Jane helped open the eyes of Huck. Huck described her as the most beautiful girl in the town. Huck wanted to protect her because after staying with her and getting to know her, he felt that it was his job to protect her. The King and Duke have been stealing and ripping people off. Huck got tired of it and said, “and this is another one that I’m letting him rob her of her money!” (Twain 188). Huck got tired of doing the wrong things. He wanted to do the right thing especially for Mary Jane. Huck preferred stealing the money back, so he could give it to Mary later. This caused Huck to say the truth. Huck even said, “I says to myself, I reckon a body that ups and tells the truth when he is in a tight place…but it look to me like the truth is better, actuly safer, than a lie” (Twain 199-200). If Huck did not realize he was doing the wrong thing and stood up for what he actually thought was right then he wouldn’t ever learned this lesson.
