Smart Player “King of the Bingo Game,” by Ralph Ellison, is all about internal conflict. In this story the black man from Down South come in another place to play the game Bingo where he see different type of people with different behavior. In his place all people are friendly there is no my n yours if they want something from someone they can ask them even they don’t know each other. The story is all about the Bingo game where nobody know how to win the game, but people came to play with the hope of win. In the beginning of the story it tells that the man came from South is waiting to play bingo and at the same time one old man give him a beer and he became drunk because he have not eat anything from the morning. He has 5 bingo card but he don’t know he have that much card. While the game He don’t have to leave the button even Laura don’t understand. He is happy that he is going to win and speak loudly that “Live Laura baby” suddenly all people became silence and see back of him and when he see back he see the 2 people coming. They were taking him slowly but he cannot leave the wheel he try to run and run back again in the wheel and say he cannot give it up and when those man try to pull him up from the stage he see it rest at double zero. Finally he win the game and he get the all prize. He do not get the justice of the man ‘s tight smile and he know even as it slipped out of him that his luck had run out on the stage. Jackson starts off by setting a beautiful scene of a clear and sunny day with green grass and blooming flowers as the backdrop for a horrific process, the lottery. The lottery is a long-standing tradition in the town and causes the members of the community to choose the love of family and friends or to conform to society expectations. The tradition is so entrenched that the community blindly accepts the lottery and allows a ritual murder to occur year after year. Indeed, the narrator comes from a long line of black men who’ve felt the difficult struggles while trying to live alongside the white people. The protagonist speaks of his grandparents, who felt after the civil war, they were free, but on his deathbed, however, the grandfather spoke to the narrator’s father, telling the protagonist’s father that he himself felt like a traitor. He advised the narrator’s father to subvert the whites. The narrator recalls a speech he had given in high school—one that spoke of ways to advance as a black man in America. With great success, the protagonist is invited to deliver this speech to his community’s white citizens. Upon arriving, the narrator is told to take part in what is called a battle royal; believing its part of the entertainment, the narrator agrees to take part. The white men then blindfold the youths and order them to begin fighting each other. The narrator lasts until the last round, when he suffers a loss. After the men have removed the blindfolds, they lead the black men to a rug covered with coins and bills. The boys dive for the money, but discover that an electric current runs through the rug. “The Rocking-Horse Winner” is a short story about a young boy, Paul, who has the supernatural ability to choose a winning race horse. It is not clear how the boy has this ability but he hears his mother’s voice echo in his mind saying that they are poor and so he sets out to change that. Paul takes on the stress of his mother’s greed. This short story relates to the obsession of wealth which what motivates the characters aside of neglect, faulty sense of value, opportunism and deceit. Paul believes that there is more money to be made and thus goes on a frenzy to win more, but consequently dies after falling off his rocking horse due to convulsions of a fever.
I selected Ralph Ellison’s short story “Battle Royal”, as this assessment illuminates the struggles of both race as well as issues oppression within society, in which many must continue to endure. The narrator, a young black teenager has attended an event absent of both law and order as a guest speaker only to be severed up as just another entrée for the prominent group of southern white ringmasters to feast upon. Subsequently, he now realizes “that it was on the occasion of a smoker, and I was told that since I was to be there anyway I might as well take part in the battle royal to be fought by some of my schoolmates as part of the entertainment.” Forced to fight for a right to speak, the young man is in the midst of an alcohol induced and cigar smoke filled circus of violence and sexual misconduct, which is fueled of force intimidation. Many of the symbols used in this story resonances of both race and inequality within a regime lacking integrity, where one is neither protected nor served fairly. Moreover, it is with this view of hopelessness, despair as well as mistrusts that offer a seed of change in society, in which the invisible becomes the visible.

These stories share similarities in symbols and themes but they do not share the same plot which makes it different from one another. Furthermore, “The lottery” was held in New England village where 300 people were living in that village. This event took place every once a year. Besides, the story begins where on one beautiful morning, everyone in that village gathered to celebrate the lottery. The surroundings were such that children were gathering stones while adults were chatting with each other. It was compulsory for every head of family or house to draw a slip of paper out of the box. In addition to that, the family that draws the slip in the black do will have to re draw in order to see who will win the lottery. Therefore, the winner of the lottery will be stoned to death. This is very shocking because in today’s lottery events, the winner will be awarded cash.

The winner of the lottery will stoned to death by the society. Although there is no main character in the story, the story develops within other important elements. There are some important elements of the story that develop the theme of the story: narrator and its point of view, symbolism, and main conflict. The story “The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson, argues practicing a tradition without understanding the meaning of the practice is meaningless and dangerous.
The narrator came up with an idea that overpowered his emotions and made him stand up for what he thought was wrong. He said “Over the next few days an idea forms within me, ripening, swelling, pushing everything else into a corner.” (Kinsella 3). This shows his passion for the sport and that he will do as much as he can to right the wrong because it could not be forgotten. The narrator also rebelled against the strike and the artificial turf by gaining accomplices and slowly switching the synthetic grass to a real square of sod. This led a protest against the strike and made the protagonist, and many other community members stand up for what they believe is right. Furthermore, defiance is a theme all through the story by the protagonist rebelling and standing up for what he truly believes in.

On June twenty-seventh of every year, the members of this traditional community hold a village-wide lottery in which everyone is expected to participate. Throughout the story, the reader gets an odd feeling regarding the residents and their annual practice. Not until the end does he or she gets to know what the lottery is about. Thus, from the beginning of the story until almost the end, there is an overwhelming sense that something terrible is about to happen due to the Jackson's effective use of foreshadowing through the depiction of characters and setting. Effective foreshadowing builds anticipation for the climax and ultimately the main theme of the story - the pointless nature of humanity regarding tradition and cruelty.
Ralph Ellison’s short story, Battle Royal, is mainly a description of the African American struggle for equality and identity. The narrator of the story is an above average youth of the African American community [Goldstein-Shirlet, 1999]. He is given an opportunity to give a speech to some of the more prestigious white individuals. His expectations of being received in a positive and normal environment are drastically dashed when he is faced with the severity of the process he must deal with in order to accomplish his task. The continuing theme of Battle Royal is that of a struggle for one’s rights against great odds. Instances of this struggle are found throughout the story. Ellison highlights the vastness of the problems faced by the African American community to claim themselves. This is done by the extreme nature of the incidents described in the Battle Royal. A short analysis of the major theme found in Ellison’s Battle Royal, supported by a literary criticism dealing with the tone and style of the story.
1. The narrator was from a dramatic, objective point of view. The narrator sees all that is going on but does not know all, such as the lottery choosing who will be stoned. The narrator only provides the information that is currently going on, they do not draw conclusions or interpretations. It is written more like a show that you watch where you can only see what is currently happening, but you can see what is currently happening for everyone.
Out of all the short stories that were assigned, it can be seen that they have all one thing in common. They all show the realms of violence each of them different. The story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a story where violence is shown in the most barbarous way possible. But with it, the author wants us to understand that violence is abhorrent and “The Lottery” shows that violent behavior can even corrupt the most innocent minds.

Another very significant message she conveys is how custom and tradition can hold great power over people. Jackson also conveys the message of how men treat women as objects.
“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a short story about a society in which it is a tradition for the population of a town to gather together in the middle of town for a random drawing with the prize of the individual being stoned. Mrs. Hutchinson was late to the raffle, protesting the whole time how it was unfair, and in the end was the individual that was chosen. This sequence of events and using literary element analysis leads the reader to believe that the so-called “random drawing” is actually controlled to target certain individuals that are threatening their tradition. Therefore, the central idea of “The Lottery” is that if one goes against tradition, society will be violent.
