In the book American Now, a student from San Francisco State University, Holly Nall has written essay about mixed relationships and she talks about her relationship with her boyfriend. Holly Nall has a relationship with a black man and he is also sixteen years older than her. According to Holly Nall, “If you wouldn’t’ date or marry someone of the same gender, or outside your own race, ethnicity, generation, religion, political party or income bracket, that’s perfectly fine. In the United Sates, it is legal for same sex marriage, but in my culture it is not. Even it is legal to have marriages between same sexes, they have to face many discriminations in their life. Most cultures and religions do not support same sex marriage. Even in this modern society, people have negative thoughts toward mixed race marriages. However, when two people are in love, it does not matter about what sex they are or what color they are. All people have the freedom to be happy. If people are happy with not getting married, then they can stay single, but our society and religion do not understand that. In some cultures, people have to get married. For example, the culture where I was from, I grew up in a small town in Nepal. It is our culture it is traditional to get married and have kids. Many cultures do not allow a man and a woman to live together without marriage. The Bible also forbids it. Now, in this modern society, culture is changing. Most people no longer care about what other people think. Now, it is common for a man and a woman to live together without getting married. All men are created equal, it says in the declaration of independence. People should not be discriminated by their race, nationality, religion, or their sexual orientation, but some people are so judgmental. Some of us judge on people without knowing them. Gay and lesbian people are same as like straight people. For instance, they are people with emotions, and they have the same rights. They should not be discrimination by being who they are. In the United Sates now it is legal for same sex marriages, however, gay and lesbian people faces many discriminations on their daily life. For example, they have to face discrimination from the churches, bible does not support same sex marriages and they refuse to allow to have same sex weddings in churches. If two people are happy with each other, that is all it matter. In the relationship being happy is primarily important, therefore gender is just a name.
