I chose to represent my summer reading book Sycamore Row by John Grisham with a mock Facebook page. I chose to use Lettie Lang as my character for my Facebook page because it allowed me to show the connections she had with all of the other characters throughout the book. Lettie started off in the book as a quiet house maid for Seth. Then her name became know to everyone when they heard that Lettie’s boss Seth left her over 20 million dollars in his will when he had died.
The first post on Lettie’s newsfeed was when she learned that her boss Seth Hubbard had hung himself after he had been battling with cancer. This was an important part in the book because with Seth’s death we learn that he had made a will just hours before he had died. In this will it cut out his whole family and left a lot of his estate to Lettie, his African American house maid. This created a lot of problems and happened to the the conflict in the story.
The second post on her newsfeed was from Jake saying the he had received Seth’s hand written will that he had made just hours before he hung himself. In this letter Jake was named the estate’s lawyer which meant he was in charge of making sure the will was fallowed. This allowed him to get a steady salary which could’t have come at a better time because his family was still suffering from when their house burned down.
The third post was when Jake filled Seth’s hand written will in court. This was an important part in the book due to the fact that no one had know about the hand written will and was a shock to many people. I included a family together because she had a large family that she would spend her time with when she was not in court. I use a picture of a house on fire because as we learned from Ancil that Lettie’s house was burned down by Seth’s father when she was just a baby. Finally, I used a picture of a large house because Lettie worked as a house cleaner for Seth for many years.
I used a mock Facebook page to represent my summer reading book Sycamore Row by John Grisham. I chose to use this as my way to represent it because it was the best way for me to show all of the details from the book while also making it clear to someone who has not read the book before. It also allowed me to show the roles of each character in the book and who they where.
Although Jake was spared his life in the great war, he lost another part of his life and future. Jack tries to compensate his lack of any real future with Brett or any other women with his passion for bullfighing and other frivalties. In John Steele Gordon’s article, “What We Lost in the Great War” Gordon laments the loss of hope and future the generation of the war felt. The characters of the novel, and especially Jake, exemplify the lack of direction felt after the war. Their aimless drinking, parties and participation in the fiesta is an example of the absence of focus in their life.
Later on in the book during a storm captain kills Mr. Hollybrass and blames it on Charlotte. This book had a lot of violence which makes the story more interesting.
Originally published in 1999, Mary Pattillo’s Black Picket Fences explores the circumstances and conventions of the Black middle class, a group that has experienced both scholarly and popular neglect. In the Acknowledgments section of this work, Pattillo details the mentorship she received as a graduate student from William Julius Wilson at the University of Chicago. She recounts that Wilson often encouraged his students to extend, and even challenge his scholarly works, and that this urging provided the impetus for her research on the Black middle class (xiv). The challenge Pattillo (2013) refers to, becomes quite apparent when comparing her work to Wilson’s 1980 piece, The Declining Significance of Race. In this work, Wilson (1980) contends that in the industrial/modern era of the United States, class has surpassed race to be a salient factor of social stratification. A person can never be too far beyond forgiveness. Everybody makes mistakes in life and deserves another chance to do what is right. When Rake’s players were with him on the team, they hated him at some point and were miserable with him coaching. He treated his players like dirt to make them the best that they could be. The players did not realize it then and hated him for it. After their glory days were long gone, Rake’s drive and cruelty had a reason that they could finally see. Many times Rake crossed the line with his practicing techniques and pushed his athletes to the edge. ... during this time. Problem involving the racial order in society caused many deaths not only in the book but in real life. Jane was free but lived as a slave her entire life. Jane tried to escape to the south but failed and work the same jobs as she did when she was a slave. Black people were not slaves but law anymore but they still lived in mental slavery, bound by the racial order. Black people suffered for many years after slavery and fought for civil rights just as Jane, Ned, and Jimmy “The One” did.

In America the topic of homelessness is one that is rarely discussed. The ongoing issues faced by the less fortunate of society continues to be viewed as a public nuisance versus a problem that is in need of viable solutions. John Grisham’s “Somewhere for Everyone” and “Same Kind of Different as Me” written by Ron Hall, Denver Moore, Lynn Vincent explores the issues from various viewpoints. The two books are more of similarity than that of difference since they discuss similar themes Poverty and suffrage are key elements of both pieces of literature. A root cause for homelessness is financial stability so the theme of poverty prevalent for this discussion.
I never thought that I would read a book over the summer, but over the course of these past two months, that changed. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” forever changed how I view slavery. I loved reading it. Throughout the whole novel, Stowe uses her experience and knowledge to portray the terrible hardships and struggles that slaves endured everyday. Not only does this book express the thoughts of the slaves and their faith in God, but also of the people around them. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” wanted so badly for America to give freedom and equality for all people, and that is what I enjoyed most while reading.
1. As I was reading the book Clockwork Orange, I felt like it deserved a 8 out of 10. I enjoyed the book because while I was reading it, I did not have such a clear image of all the rape, sex, and violence. Talking from personal experiences, I did not want to picture those images in my head. Finding out there was a movie of Clockwork Orange kind of scared me but also gave me excitement because I wanted to see how different the the book was from the movie. After viewing Clockwork Orange, I would rate it a 7 out of 10. I rated it a 7 out of 10 because the rape and violence was overused. In the beginning of the movie, there were non-stop sex and rape scenes. For example, when Alex and his goons fake their way into an emergency just so they could attack a older man and rape his wife, who later dies because of this accident. In the book Bleachers by John Grisham, Rake was a long time hero because of the winning streak of 84 games and the 13 state titles Rake, but despite the legacy and popularity of Coach Eddie Rake, he is a horrible person.
Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.

For my Literature Circle assignment I read the novel entitled The Catcher in the Rye, written by J.D. Salinger.Taking place in the 1950's, The Catcher in the Rye is one of the most popular American books of all time, though, its hero is not really a hero at all. Main character Holden Caufield, is a 17 year old, disproved and misunderstood, classic "screw-up", who does poorly in school, loses his team's equipment, and takes an impulsive trip to New York. Distraught by the death of his 11 year old brother Allie, Holden wanders around his birthplace of New York, reconnecting with old friends and making new enemies. The main conflict of this novel is Holden transitioning into an adult and trying to cope with his brother’s death. One main theme displayed all throughout this novel would be depression. For the duration of this novel, Holden spends his time alone, and even if he is in the company of other people, you hear his thoughts of being depressed. Most of this depression is derived from his brother’s death, but there are many other things accountable for his mental issues. Although much of this novel was just Holden’s opinions and thoughts, I found this novel to be very interesting and thought provoking.
The book Uncle Tom’s Cabin is considered a classic. Many times classic lose some of their impact as time goes by but that is not the case with Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel. It can be argued that the story has more meaning and impact now then it even did when it was first published. It is a glimpse into a dark period of American history that people have no actual frame of reference to understand. Books like Stowe’s puts a name and an emotional context to what can otherwise be viewed through a detached lens of indifference.
