During the play “Hamlet” and the movie “The Renaissance Man” many characters in both the movie and play make life choices that evidently lead to trickledown effect in their lives. Prince Hamlet made several life decisions that affected his life as he sought to avenge his father’s murder. Similarly, Roosevelt Nathaniel Hobbs made choices in his past that affected his life drastically in his military career. Many other characters in there fictional worlds made choices that affected their lives as well, such as King Claudius and Bill Rago. Even in my own life I have made choices that have dictated my present situation and may be in even my future. Hamlet soon is told that his father was murdered by Hamlet’s own uncle Claudius. Hamlet takes on the task of vengeance after he was given word from his dead father’s ghost who is stuck in purgatory until revenge is sought out. Hamlet taking on this task seals his fate as he goes on a trail of madness, violence and anarchy. Hamlet’s choice of vengeance led to him to kill Polonius and indirectly himself. His choice to assume this madness drove his girlfriend away and nearly got himself killed by order of King Claudius. In the end Hamlet died by the sword of Laertes son of Polonius who Hamlet killed. At a young age I was always very outgoing and outspoken about the ills of the black community and many social injustices that plague American culture. As my curiosity grew I began to question a lot of my Catholic School clergy and teachers on theology, race and social stratification. Although many of my questions came to no avail no question I did raise sparked a lot of controversy in the class room. In the eighth grade I asked my homeroom teacher her thoughts on Martin Luther King Jr. She replied with a moderate answer that didn’t really satisfy my needs for debate. Considering I had vague ideas of leader typology I began to question my teacher on whether or not Martin Luther King was an important role model for African American students. “Of course!” she replied, undoubtedly but I think she missed the point. I thought ran across my mind about MLK and our rigorous study of him and only him during black history every single year from kindergarten through 8th grade year. I began to question whether white moderates like my 8th grade homeroom teacher and many others were blinded by the social brainwashing that MLK was the most important black leader in the Civil Rights movement and whether we should even learn about it him at all during black history month.
