It is so nice to have access to the things people need to buy in stores. Whether it is the newest style of clothing in the right side of the store, or the maple syrup in aisle four. Envirosell is the company shopping businesses go to for advice on what certain items should be placed. The placement for products is placed where they are because of consumers. Companies realize what people need and they take it as sources to produce commodities. However, companies which have famous brands try to get people’s attention by developing their products. Because there are several options available of commodities, people might be in a dilemma to choose what product they looking for. In fact, that dilemma is not real, it is just what people want. That is what Steve McKevitt claims in his article “Everything Now”. When people go shopping there are limitless choices of one product made by different companies, all choices of this product basically do the same thing, but what makes them different is the brand’s name. Companies with brands are trying to get their consumers by presenting their commodities in ways which let people feel impressed, and that are some things they need to buy. Shopping has become a pleasure for most individuals and with the help of technology it has been implemented in every dimension of our lives. Business and capitalism have dominated the majority of markets that involve consumer related goods such as clothing, apparel, and food. Living in a consumer driven market, individuals are capable of obtaining all of their necessities at a fairly reasonable price. Corporations on their end are dedicated to find new ways on providing the ultimate good at minimal cost of production even if lives are at risk. Capitalism is income driven, and to generate income, it requires one to satisfy the needs of the individuals who are willing to spend hard earned compensation on their goods no matter how little the pay. To satisfy the demand, executives have broken production methods down to a science with the help of technology to accommodate their everyday need. Productions costs have decreased while levels of productions have augmented throughout the globe; consumer demand is on the rise and someone will try to find a way to supply it. Being ethical consumers would be the ultimate option for all, indeed but these unethical standards can be seen as an act to go above and beyond to provide care for the unattained crowds that also have needs that are to be met. As consumers, we would want to be ethical but to which extent if merchandise produced under sinister measures are cost efficient and incomparable in price to goods made ethically and local.
In his article, “SkyMall: Pie in the Sky”, Bill McKibben reveals how absurd consumerism has become. He uses the SkyMall catalog placed purposefully in every seat-back pocket on North American airplanes to exhibit the harebrained things people think they need in today’s world. Its products range anywhere from a $4,000 massaging recliner that pampers its user beyond imagination to an ultraviolet toothbrush cleaner and Germ Guardian. The catalog’s audience is obvious. Someone would have to be focusing on themselves and how tired, overworked, paranoid, and spoiled they can possibly be. No one in their right mind would buy these items, but many times ridiculous items like them are bought. Why do people waste their money this way? McKibben points to the instant gratification, laziness, robotic actions, spoiled lives, foolish spending, and selfishness of society to explain this phenomenon (557-559).
I believe many people adore shopping and sometimes shopping can relieve our stress. I think it is good to shop once in a while but not always, because a lot of shopping may cause financial problems which could increase our stress rather than relieve. The author interviews a woman named Laura, she said “I am constantly suffering from megamall withdrawal. I come here all the time” (Guterson 105). Then her friend Kathleen replied, “It’s a sickness. It’s like a cocaine or something: It’s a drug and I need to be here” says Kathleen. This become as a shopaholic because for mall shopaholic, shopping triggers some part of their brain and make them feel happy and excited for making purchases. We buy a lot of things which we do not need then we just waste our money. I think we need to reduce buying things which is not important for us because we worked so hard to earn money and in a minute we could waste all the money. People should have more maturity. We need to think wisely, spend less and save more money for our future
When comparing two different ways of shopping most people do not even think about the difference, they do both and not even realize it. In today's society people shop while at work, after work and on the weekends, whenever time permits. Stop and think how can I get more time in the day for family or just myself? The best way to figure that out with all the recourses we have is to go into a store and spend time looking through racks and waiting in endless lines to just purchase something. I compared going into a store verses online shopping; to see which one will save you time and money.
As technology get more advance, people use cameras, tracking devices in the stores to track customers shopping behavior. The retailers apply every detail that they get from anthropologists to get people buy their products. Some people claim that the surveillance of consumers by retail anthropologists is manipulative and unethical. However, the claim is not entirely true. I’ve noticed that when I have money, I do not buy anything, and when I do not have money I want everything I see.
