He described a spiritual Namaste in which the sacred in one honors the sacred in another. Once Palmer (1998) defined sacred as “that which is worthy of respect” (p.111). Sacred is everywhere as nothing is not worthy of respect. By recovering the sense of sacredness, one recovers five things: The precious otherness of things of the world; the precious inwardness of things of the world; community with all creation; humility, making teaching and learning possible; and the capacity for wonder and surprise (Palmer, 1997). The learning experience affects teachers and students as they are each transformed and influenced by one another. Positive learning experiences affirm both the teacher’s and student’s career choices, whereas a negative experience diminishes both the teacher’s and student’s career choices which may ultimately lead to leaving the profession. Positive engagement creates a transformative learning experience, equipping students for their future work. For Palmer (1998), good teaching cannot be reduced to technique. Good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher. A community is comprised of a group of goal oriented individuals with similar beliefs and expectations. The point that community has an important effect on the shaping of a person’s character is key in both Pythia Peay’s essay, “Soul Searching” and Winona LaDuke’s interview transcribed in essay form entitled, “Reclaiming Culture and the Land: Motherhood and the Politics of Sustaining Community”. The two authors present ideas, similar and different, of what it means to live in and be a part of community. Through examining these two essays, summarizing and synthesizing, we can gain a better understanding of what community is and how it affects those within it.
John Dewey’s work on the topic of educational experience was initiated in 1896 at the University of Chicago where he began the University Laboratory School, which was later to become the ‘Dewey School’. Here, over the course of the next forty years, Dewey experimented and researched his conception of education as experience. A final consolidation or summary of this work finally found its capital expression in his book ‘Experience and Education’ in 1938. The legacy of Dewey’s philosophy is far reaching, pervading so much of educational theory particularly in the West, and continues to aid us in designing innovative educational approaches and programs today. Given its pre-eminence, the intention here is to identify and reflect on some of themes presented in this book and to suggest how these ideas might inform my personal development of teacher identity.
Sense of community has been operationalised as a state like entity, and as the outcome of certain social processes. As such, a conceptual framework has been developed that allows understanding of the way people are socialised into their communities and maintain, or fail to establish and maintain, social engagement. This has also been understood in terms of process analysis of social change. Its linkage to power is important, as it helps define the setting in which power is used and is less likely to be abused. From a process perspective, sense of community is a changing feature of people’s relationships to others, and as such can be a barometer of change in 18 18 community. It can be beneficial in helping people create a sense of identity and a resilience to untoward social change. As a central aspect of the development and maintenance of social connectedness, it is useful in conceptualising adaptive and protective factors for positive life in community. Sense of community can also be associated with negative aspects of social life. The nature of exclusion of ‘others’ can lead to harmful social consequences. Usually these consumers or people who admire the certain brand would be very brand loyal. In today’s society, teachers are faced with ongoing challenges and need to be equipped with a range of teaching options and strategies so they are able to make the best possible decisions in their lessons. A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. Often when individuals have lived on a street or in an area for a while they become familiar with each other and the issues surrounding them. Children often attend the same schools and grow up together, again sharing similar experiences. In some instances adults may work together, and quite commonly all community members will share the same doctors, dentists, hospitals, health visitors and other public services and facilities.
Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
Individuals who enter the field of education reply to the question why teach with various answers. There is beauty, joy, and fulfillment in this profession, and these spirit-lifting emotions are the result of watching annually as a new group of children enter to learn and leave with the knowledge to achieve. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on the profession first by stating that teaching is not the career for everyone. He goes on to say, that the education profession has the ability to present the “unique opportunity” for individuals to cast a positive influence upon others (Why Teach, 2000, p.1). The smiles received from a room full of students when as a whole their individual needs, both educational and personal have been catered to, prompts a burst of passion in every teacher.
