Analysis on Sicko
Michael Moore uses Sicko to criticize the media in the United States. Using a sarcastic tone throughout his film, Moore contrasts the free, universal health care in Canada, Britain, France, and Cuba and expensive, inefficient health insurance in the U.S. along with many other false messages broadcast on media. He reveals the healthcare differences between what is displayed on media and in reality. By exposing these contrasts, Moore shows that media is not so truthful to the public.
Supporting such concept, the article “Australian Government Media Strategies,” written by Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani and Irene Limberis Twombly, analyzes how Australian government uses media tactic in order to protect its international image and reputation. According to Sani and Twombly, “[Habermas] finds in the process, a manipulated public sphere where the flooding of advertising arose as economic concentration increased in order to assure market stability and share” (Sani, Twombly, 3). In other words, in a controlled society in which media manipulation is practiced, plenty of marketing propaganda occurs due to an increase in commercialization to maintain profits. What this means is that the Australian citizens who live in a capitalist country where marketing is so wide spread seek to look for less biased information. They tend to believe more in government which seems to be less industrial. Therefore, their ideas and knowledge rely more heavily upon their government, and the society becomes more controlled by the government. ...the media in the United States does not always present the authentic information to its audience. Government, the powerful authority, uses manipulations to inform people what they want people to believe. More than often, such falsehoods mislead audience who might become less mindful of the social issues around them. Moore hopes to use this film to arise people’s awareness and to warn government’s falsification so that the society in the United States will become a stronger nation.
