Lord of the Flies is a very interesting movie that does a wonderful job incorporating sociology into the main story line since it’s clearly about a group of boys who become stranded on an island. The group of boys struggle immediately with social order. The boys begin fighting over who will be in charge. For example, the conversation on the beach between Ralph and Piggy shows that Piggy is concerned about how to maintain social order to help prevent the chaos that will unfortunately occur in a situation that the young boys are in. Ralph and Piggy come across their first symbol of order when they find the conch, which is a spiral shell that can be blow in to create a low baritone sound such as a trombone. At first, the boys how positive behavior; however once the boys became members of the hunters, they began behavior like barbaric animals with no values or rules. This is a perfect example of differential association how the boys associated themselves with the hunters began to show signs of deviant behaviors. Jack also illustrates a laisses-fair leader that doesn’t seem to care if crimes or committed due to the lack of authority figures on the island. This was a very interesting movie. Another interesting topic was how both groups believed what they needed to accomplish to survive was completed different. For example, Ralph’s group believed that establishing order, having a chain of command and following orders in a civilized way was the correct direction. However, Jack’s group felt completed different about how things should be ran. He believe that a dictatorship was the best method. Someone who makes all the decisions and has complete control over the entire group. These are perfect examples of culture goals and how they vary from person to person. This comes to show you that Ralph’s approach is much more civilized and create social order within the groups while Jack’s beliefs have no systemic value and would eventually crumple due to much power by one
This is a story about a group of British schoolboys who survive a plane crash only to find themselves the only survivors and are forced to hunt for food, create shelter, and develop their own kind of civilization in order to survive. They conform to the ways of the British government that they know and apply those standards to establish their own type of government. This starts a rivalry against Ralph and Jack, both fighting for the position of chief. When Ralph is voted chief by the boys this of course sets of Jack. Throughout the story he becomes more violent and aggressive and soon rules over the boys. They conform to Jack's demands, mostly having to do with his power of intimidation, however it all comes down to fear. Jack was able to use their fear to keep them on his side and made them feel a sense of belonging and importance. It also may have helped that the food was on Jack's side as well. This shows however, that because they have conformed to societal pressures, the boys have lost their sense of individuality and
The Lord of the Flies is an ultimately pessimistic novel. In the midst of the cold war and communism scares, this disquieting aura acts as a backdrop to the island. The Lord of the Flies addresses questions like how do dictators come to power, do democracies always work, and what is the natural state and fate of humanity and society, getting at the heart of human nature in a very male-dominated, conflict-driven way. At the opening of the novel, Ralph and Jack get on extremely well. We are informed Jack, “shared his burden,” and there was an, “invisible light of friendship,” between the two boys. Jack changes considerably throughout this novel. At first he tells us, “I agree with Ralph we’ve got to have rules and obey them,” This shows us that at the beginning of the novel, just like Ralph, he wants to uphold a civilised society. We are also notified, “Most powerfully there was the conch.” As the conch represents democracy we can see that at the beginning of the novel the boys sustain a powerful democratic society.

In the Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses a variety of symbols to represent ideas, or abstract notions or conceptions about people, places, and things. A symbol, according to the Webster's Dictionary, is an object that stands for something in addition to its literal meaning. In the book, there is a continual breakdown of society and civilization on the island. During this breakdown, Golding uses symbolism to further explain the process. Some of the things he symbolizes in the novel are the island itself, the conch, the boys clothing, and the violence.

Ralph shows that he has a better understanding of the boys than Jack. He knows that the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules for them. Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Ralph knows that the littleuns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. They work together for a while, but as the time goes on the smaller boys want to go play. They slowly lose all their help until Simon and Ralph are the only ones left to work on them. Ralph knows that this is a necessity and keeps bringing it up at the meetings. The political system that they had on the island was corrupt. It wasn't the system but the individuals who were responsible for corruption in society. At first they had a leader, Ralph. "But you haven't yet (51)." Soon, Jack decides he's had enough of Ralph, "I'm not going to be part of Ralph's lot. I'm going by myself. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come (127)." He lures the other boys away and makes a tribe. Ralph's community deteriorates. Jack is responsible for the corruption of their society.

These groups of young English schoolboys have conflicts between them for many different reasons. Some of them are so spread apart in age that their beliefs and actions are very different. Other groups are conflicting because they have different opinions about who the leader of the entire group should be. The groups also argue about what their priorities should be while trapped on the island. These conflicts continue to grow until the very end, when one group finally gains supremacy.
