James Joyce’s short story “Araby” is an emotion filled rollercoaster about a young boy, who is learning all about his feelings for the opposite sex. The story starts a little unusual and hard to understand. Joyce talks about the scenery of the neighborhood the boy is living in, while also giving a back story. The young boy now lives in a house that used to be owned by a priest who had past away. He goes on to talk about the garden behind the house. As you continue to read the story you 'll see that description of the garden plays a big part in the significance of the story and the boys feelings. “The wild garden behind the house contained a central apple-tree and a few straggling bushes under one of which I found the tenants rusty pickle pump” ( Joyce-322). As we draw closer the final paragraphs of James Joyce’s story, it is now where we start to learn the moral of “Araby” The boy walks into the bazaar, rushing before it closed and forgetting the reason he was there just like he forgot the answer he gave to his sweet crush. He remembers, “ Porcelain vases and flowered tea-sets”(Joyce-326). There are two young men and one young lady in bazaar and they are having a conversation as the boy walks in. The young women looking at what the young boy was doing walks over and asks him if he was going to buy anything to which he replied “ No, thank you” ( Joyce-326). This is when the boy realizes that he is different from them and that when the boy see that the girls is just coming up to him because it 's her job and not because she truly cares about what the boy is doing in the store. The young boy sees this and is immediately turned away. He awakens from the love struck in his eyes and see again the hatred he has for his town again.
