There are five stages in developing groups, forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. (Robbins & Judge, 2011). The forming stage is when the group members are uncertain about the group’s purpose, structure, and leadership. Members find out what is acceptable behavior and get their assignments. The storming stage is when the members have their ideas and want to do things their way. This stage has debating, and confrontation as the team decides what to do. There usually is a conflict of who will be in charge but eventually, they bond as a team. The norming stage is when a group solidifies the groups structure, values, and behaviors. (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 280). Police departments have a group norm towards ethnic suspects. Hudson (2015), "15 percent of officers will do the right thing no matter what is happening. Fifteen percent of officers will abuse their authority at every opportunity. The remaining 70 percent could go either way depending on whom they are working with. (para. 1)." The performing stage is when group completes its task. The adjourning stage is when the group has finished and disbanded.
