“Your desire to change must be greater than your desire to stay the same.” A guy name Colin Wilson wrote a quote that has the same idea as this one. His quote goes along the lines like this, “The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain.” A conformist is a person who accepts behavior and does not doing anything about it.Stoicism is the endurance of pain or hardship without a display of feelings and without complaint. Basically the common man or woman does not say much when that person is in pain and they just stand there and take it even though it is repeatedly happening. I see this everywhere I go because not only just a few people do it but a large majority just let it …show more content…
They are scared to go out fo their way and fall completely on their face and embarrass themselves. All of the greats nowadays failed times and times again to get to where they are at. They probably failed more times than they succeed. They learned from their mistakes to make them better. They saw what they did wrong the first time and the second time it comes around they know what to do so it doesn 't happen again. This is completely true because I experienced this first handed and see it with all of the great athletes today. They have this desire to be great and they are willing to do whatever they can do to achieve their goal. When I first moved to the big city I failed a lot of times but I learned from it. It made me a better person and a better athlete. I loved every bit of it too because people come to me and ask for help and I can share the experiences that i had with them, so they could be the person they are meant to be. The message is that don’t be afraid to fall on your face because if you take it to carefully then you will never live or never know what could have been. When people are on their deathbeds they don 't regret the things that they did but it is the things that they didn 't do. They lived all of their life in a safe way they they never truly lived. “Everybody dies but only a few people live.” This quote explains this message
Change is good." We hear the catchy phrase everywhere. From company slogans to motivational speeches, our world seems to impose this idea that change is always a good thing. Assuming that the change is for the better, it is probably a true statement in most cases. The root of this idea seems to come from the notion that we are dissatisfied with the state that we are in, so, in order to create a more enjoyable surrounding, we adjust. Others, however, stray from this practice, and instead of trying to adapt to the people around them, they try and change others.
For many, change is a cause for ignorance. Most of us fear the idea of change. When one is faced to deal with c...
In his short story, A Rose for Emily, well-known American writer and Nobel Prize laureate, William Faulkner, narrates the consequences of people not changing with the times. He lived in the south when slavery was acceptable and includes this in many of his stories. Faulkner’s purpose is to emphasize to his audience that people must accept change and evolve or risk isolation and ultimately dying alone. Faulkner’s views on change are brought out effectively in “A Rose for Emily” through his use of setting, tone, and diction. This paper will explore these strategies used by Faulkner to convey to his audience the importance of being able to adapt to a dynamically changing world. It will also answer the question of whether or not Miss Emily was stuck in the past and unable to move forward.
Athletes are often viewed specially because of their intense determination. They often beat themselves up in order to overcome what they think they can do. Breaking this threshold nearly always requires the overcoming of adversity. In sports psychology, when an athlete “not only makes it through [his] adversity, but acquires additional protective factors in the process”, he has undergone what is known as “resilient reintegration” (Galli, Nick, and Robin S. Vealey 318). This is especially the case when “an athlete returns with a greater appreciation of sport or a stronger work ethic than before” (319). According to exercise and sport scientist Galli’s study, athletes who overcame adversity were ninety percent more capable to cope with future adversities and perform “well in both sport and in life” (320). It is no surprise that people who have overcome adversities in their past are better suited to overcome them again. What is a surprise is how far this truly goes. In fact, this study shows that athletes who have returned from an
Society is ever changing and the people are just the same. Throughout history, it is shown that people change and mold to their surroundings. But when a deeper look is taken it is revealed that there is a minority that is unwilling or unable to fit these standards as most people do. These people tend to be forced into seclusion or made to fend for themselves. This is shown through the colonization of America and up into more recent times. The Native Americans are the first to make a life on this land, and when the English set up a new society, the Natives are forced onto smaller and smaller plots of land until forced to conform or to live on a reservation. The idea of this societal conformity is shown in “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie, a short story author. Society's pressure to improve an individual living differently is hurting more than it is helping.
Each and every day a new invention is created, and the world faces a new challenge of adaption. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, humans have worked tirelessly to catch up to the rapid industrialization occurring. Even though it’s the twenty-first century, many people have managed to create new inventions. However, in the midst of constant change there are many things that have yet to be ruined. Looking at objects that have managed to last since their creation, also portray what hasn’t changed. For example, the telephone is constantly changing in its shapes and forms. Yet, communication hasn’t. There are still people who pursue relationships, and the telephone is just a catalyst of this. A famous writer was constantly pointing out this clash is William Butler Yeats. The great critic Richard Ellman wrote that Yeats’ poetry is based on the opposition between “the world of change” and a world of “changelessness.” Through careful analysis of the poems from Yeats, including When You Are Old, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, The Wild Swans at Coole, The Second Coming and Sailing to Byzantium the theme of change contrasting changelessness is evident.
Resistance to change is generally defined as ‘any conduct that serves to maintain the status quo in the face of pressure to alter the status quo’ (Zaltman and Duncan, 1977: 63). Folger and Skarlicki (1999: 36) conceptualized resistance as a ‘resentment based’ construct, defined as ‘reactions by disgruntled employees regarding the perceived unfairness of a change’. In the categorizing resistance to change that results from individuals and organizational factors.
"The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain." Colin Wilson was a prominent philosopher and his quote has the view that sometimes you just have to let life take its course and there is nothing else you can do about it. I would agree with his views and I have witnessed how others handle certain situations. The one thing I had witnessed the most was that people tend to not try and fix something that has already taken place, I feel as humans we tend to try and forget what happens and learn to live with the situation. The definition of a conformist is a person who conforms to accepted behavior or established practices. My point being that not only do we experience it, but also in movies when a tragedy occurs the characaters of that movie have to learn how to cope with life. I have also
All societies have norms, the expectations that guide the behavior of its members. Here in America we are expected to welcome others with a smile and a hand shake. For example, Lawyers and business men wear a suit and tie to work, for them to look professional. When someone sneezes they cover their mouth, it would be rude to use your phone during a funeral or in the church. If we were to break any of these rules, we would likely be considered weird or rude and we would probably feel embarrassed. Every day we make hundreds of thousands of choices and decisions while interacting with others, we do what is expected of us. I believe changing is possible. Each of us is responsible for ourselves. We can sit back and make excuses for our problems. However, we can also take responsibility for ourselves to see what changes are needed, then try to change it. For example, a person’s style of dress ma...
Failure is something in life that everyone is afraid of. Failure is apart of everyone’s life at some point whether it’s in a sport, at school, or even just a part of daily life. Failure can be in taken in two ways, one; you can take the failure in as a challenge and push to strive better and never want to fail again, or two; take failure in bad and not want to try harder and just give up without after failing once. Some of the richest or even successful people in life have had failures. The famous basketball player Michael Jordan, when he was a sophomore he tried out for the varsity basketball team and didn’t make it. But if it wasn’t for that failure in his life he would of have never tried his hardest to end up becoming one of the best NBA players in history and have one of the most successful shoe brands. That’s just one of the many successful people who had failures in life.
... If people are secure and happy with their lives it is harder to precipitate change than if they are afflicted.
"Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth." John F. Kennedy. When we allow ourselves to conform to what our friends, family or society asks of us, we lose the ability to grow into our own persons. Conformity, however, is more than just the 13 year old middle school girl wearing UGG Boots and an Abercrombie hoodie in order to fit in. It is more then only listening to the top 40 radio stations and watching American Idol so you have something to add to the conversation that your co- workers are having over stale, company supplied coffee. Conformity is a killer. It attacks the week and strangles them until their true self dies and a new person is created. This new person disregards all values they once held in high regard and will do anything to not be perceived as different. The funny thing about this killer is people are more than willing to give into his pressure in order to seem "normal". Sometimes it is easier to be obedient and do and feel as people say you should in order to avoid trouble. Sometimes it is easier to blend in to the crowd then to be crucified for being different. Why would anyone really want to be different? Society tells us different is bad. Different is weird. We are taught from the beginning that different is not what you want to be, it's not a safe bet. So people are willing to give in to the pressures of society in order to be "safe". People's willingness to give into conformity is shown in the literary pieces entitled "What is a homosexual?" by Andrew Sullivan and "Salvation" by Langston Hughes. Both show what great lengths people will go to in order to slide under the radar of public opinion and criticism.
Many people are resistant to change. They become comfortable with their lives and don’t dare to venture outside of the box.
One of the hardest things to do in life is to realize that something needs to be changed and to complete the change. It is difficult to understand sometimes, that there is need for change; many people will not even know that they are wrong and need changing or be against change completely. But it is important to continuously create change and understand why change is important. There are three reasons that I believe would cause someone to struggle to create change: The environment around the person changes, they become more educated, and they can no longer suffer in their position.
It doesn’t matter if they are failing or success, the only thing matter is how hard people are trying during the process. The value of success will worth and have respect after they walk through failure. It’s important on how people stand up after they failed, not how they failed, because everyone will fail at least one time on their life. A good example of people who fail but they stand up and learn from it is people who play sport. At first time of playing, no one will good at sport. Sometime they make a common mistake when they start play but if they learn from it, they won’t make that same mistake again during the game. To have that success they have to make mistake and fail during the practice so they can learn from it and practice to overcome their failure. But people who never fail when they play, they may make a common mistake on the
