Warren Buffet has long been known as one of the most brilliant financial minds in our country. He is most famous for his ownership of Berkshire Hathaway, a company located in Omaha, Nebraska that buys value based companies, keeps them fully intact, and adds them to it’s ever-growing portfolio. The companies’ former owners or top executives often take a job with Berkshire, where they continue to run their businesses. This model interested author Ronald Chan and inspired him to write the book Behind the Berkshire Hathaway Curtain, which is a collection of interviews with some of Buffet’s top executives. The interviews were based on a simple subject, what was the history of your business and what do you think helped make you successful? The executives at Berkshire implement a long-term plan and chose to concentrate on this, rather than focusing on short-term gains or losses. Any person who has experienced turmoil of any kind can tell you how difficult this is to do. As people we are almost preprogramed to think about the recent past rather than looking toward the future. However, this is an important part of growing both as an individual and as a company. This strategy allows you to try new approaches and make adjustments when current efforts are not working. I will continue to try to maintain this attitude both throughout my formal education and into my future career as an occupational therapist. The second book I decided to read was John C. Maxwell’s 5 Levels of Leadership. In the book the author discusses the process that he believes one must follow in order to be the ultimate leader.
