Warren Buffet has long been known as one of the most brilliant financial minds in our country. He is most famous for his ownership of Berkshire Hathaway, a company located in Omaha, Nebraska that buys value based companies, keeps them fully intact, and adds them to it’s ever-growing portfolio. The companies’ former owners or top executives often take a job with Berkshire, where they continue to run their businesses. This model interested author Ronald Chan and inspired him to write the book Behind the Berkshire Hathaway Curtain, which is a collection of interviews with some of Buffet’s top executives. The interviews were based on a simple subject, what was the history of your business and what do you think helped make you successful? Throughout the book several common themes are highlighted, and although I think they are all extremely important, for …show more content…
The executives at Berkshire implement a long-term plan and chose to concentrate on this, rather than focusing on short-term gains or losses. Any person who has experienced turmoil of any kind can tell you how difficult this is to do. As people we are almost preprogramed to think about the recent past rather than looking toward the future. However, this is an important part of growing both as an individual and as a company. This strategy allows you to try new approaches and make adjustments when current efforts are not working. I will continue to try to maintain this attitude both throughout my formal education and into my future career as an occupational therapist. The second book I decided to read was John C. Maxwell’s 5 Levels of Leadership. In the book the author discusses the process that he believes one must follow in order to be the ultimate leader. As the title implies, there are five stages that include: position, relationships, productivity, building leaders, and building leaders that build new
These three major themes which were appearance vs reality, the importance of free thought, and man vs. society were revealed throughout the book in many different scenes, and through many different characters. These major themes gave us a better understanding of the book and the characters of the book, and what some of them wanted to achieve.
emotions and subtle nuances provided by the author in the book, and many of the deeper feelings and emotions therein are missed entirely, or touched on much too briefly
Brian, a young business executive, started a small software company in his mid twenties. He would invest long hours developing his business, often working late into the nights. When the business became profitable, Brian incorporated and went public through a stock offering. Flood gates open and money poured in the company coffers and Brian grew exceedingly wealthy.
Another theme is the ability of a person to have some dignity even when it feels like the world is against you. These themes remain important today because it teaches us what can happen to a person if their dreams are never fulfilled. For example, Walter had a dream to open a liquor store, however this dream never came true after Willy (the person Walter gave the money too to open the store) betrayed him. He broke down and felt hopeless. It also teaches us that dignity is important, Walter also portrayed his need for dignity after he rejects the offer of Mr. Linder from the“home improvement
“People always overestimate how complex business is. This isn’t rocket science. We’ve chosen one of the world’s most simple professions.” In Jack Welch’s words, business is simple. A leader needs to supply his employees with the information, the resources, the vision, and the atmosphere to succeed and reward them when they do. Welch does not concern himself with the details of GE’s many business units; he only needs to ma...
Hinton, is that no one is the same. I think the theme is important because if everyone was the same the world would be boring, but since no one is the same it makes everyone different in their own way or unique. The theme was prevalent throughout the book because everyone in the book showed that they were different on almost every page, if not it was every page. The book affected me in a good way because it made me realize that everyone is different and not just certain people. How do you think this will affect the way you think about others being dissimilar. You can gain a lot from reading this novel, one thing is that everyone is unique in their own way, also that it's not what people call you, think, and or say about you that make you do the things you do, it's the way you act and the way you choose to do

There are many themes that occur and can be interpreted differently throughout the novel. The three main themes that stand out most are healing, communication, and relationships.
Accounting profit can serve as an alternative to intrinsic value. But Buffett states that “...we do not measure the economic significance or performance of Berkshire by its size; we measure by per-share progress.” Accounting reality was conservative, backward looking, and governed by GAAP (measures in terms of net profit), therefore Buffett rejects this alternative. According to the world’s most famous investor, investment decisions should be based on economic reality, not on accounting
“Warren Buffett came from a small town and made it big without losing sight of his roots in the process. Even though he is a billionaire many times over, he still lives in the same house he bought before he was rich and is considered an all-around good g...
“On leadership” was written by John W. Gardner (The Free Press, New York, 1990). He used seventeen chapters to explain and describe essential components for the leadership should be in a successful organization. This book not only has significant influence now, but also for the future. Below are my understanding about this book, which was divided into two parts. For the first part, I will pick up some perspectives which influence me most from this book. For the second part, which is my comments and critique about this book.
