Is it possible for two women who were raised in the same household be complete opposites from one another? Famous English novelist, Emily Bronte believes it is. In Emily Bronte 's Wuthering Heights, Isabella Linton 's "voice" represents darkness and Cathy Linton Heathcliff 's represents the light, therefore the two women 's voices are opposite from one another. Although both Cathy and Isabella come from the same household, Isabella 's voice takes on the role of a grimmer and more complicated woman while Isabella is the good-natured and kind spirit. One of the reasons these two women have opposite voices is because of their opposite personas. This was most evident when Heathcliff oppressed these two women. From the very beginning, as the two women are introduced to the readers, there is a clear contrast between their two descriptions. The way these two women are viewed dictates how they are treated and how they treat others. Nelly describes Isabella to Lockwood as "a charming young lady of eighteen; infantile in manners, though possessed of keen wit, keen feelings, and a keen temper, too, if irritated" (81). This description of Isabella creates a bad impression of her for the readers, considering most of the diction carries a bad connotation and has almost no goal to flatter Isabella. Most of the characters in Wuthering Heights view Isabella negatively. Although the manner in which Nelly describes Cathy to Lockwood is completely different. She describes Cathy as "the most winning thing that has ever that ever brought sunshine into a desolate house … Her spirit was high though not rough, and qualified by a heart sensitive and lively to excess affections" (152). In this description, Nelly praises Cathy as she is a holy figure. Every word in this description has positive connotations and shows that Nelly thinks very highly of Cathy. Just as Nelly is very fond of Cathy, so are many other characters of Wuthering Heights. These two voices also have remarkable contrast when they are in the face
