Is it possible for two women who were raised in the same household be complete opposites from one another? Famous English novelist, Emily Bronte believes it is. In Emily Bronte 's Wuthering Heights, Isabella Linton 's "voice" represents darkness and Cathy Linton Heathcliff 's represents the light, therefore the two women 's voices are opposite from one another. Although both Cathy and Isabella come from the same household, Isabella 's voice takes on the role of a grimmer and more complicated woman while Isabella is the good-natured and kind spirit. One of the reasons these two women have opposite voices is because of their opposite personas. This was most evident when Heathcliff oppressed these two women. From the very beginning, as the two women are introduced to the readers, there is a clear contrast between their two descriptions. The way these two women are viewed dictates how they are treated and how they treat others. Nelly describes Isabella to Lockwood as "a charming young lady of eighteen; infantile in manners, though possessed of keen wit, keen feelings, and a keen temper, too, if irritated" (81). This description of Isabella creates a bad impression of her for the readers, considering most of the diction carries a bad connotation and has almost no goal to flatter Isabella. Most of the characters in Wuthering Heights view Isabella negatively. Although the manner in which Nelly describes Cathy to Lockwood is completely different. She describes Cathy as "the most winning thing that has ever that ever brought sunshine into a desolate house … Her spirit was high though not rough, and qualified by a heart sensitive and lively to excess affections" (152). In this description, Nelly praises Cathy as she is a holy figure. Every word in this description has positive connotations and shows that Nelly thinks very highly of Cathy. Just as Nelly is very fond of Cathy, so are many other characters of Wuthering Heights. These two voices also have remarkable contrast when they are in the face
Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights share similarities in many aspects, perhaps most plainly seen in the plots: just as Clarissa marries Richard rather than Peter Walsh in order to secure a comfortable life for herself, Catherine chooses Edgar Linton over Heathcliff in an attempt to wrest both herself and Heathcliff from the squalid lifestyle of Wuthering Heights. However, these two novels also overlap in thematic elements in that both are concerned with the opposing forces of civilization or order and chaos or madness. The recurring image of the house is an important symbol used to illustrate both authors’ order versus chaos themes. Though Woolf and Bronte use the house as a symbol in very different ways, the existing similarities create striking resonances between the two novels at certain critical scenes.

Among the social issues discussed in Wuthering Heights, one of the most prevalent is the treatment of women. This is especially highlighted with Heathcliff, who interacts with three women throughout story. Each woman sees a different man based on his motivation. Catherine sees a loving, beautiful person; Isabella sees an evil, spiteful creature; and Catherine sees an abuser. Heathcliff’s treatment of each woman is motivated by love, anger, and vengeance.
Heathcliff cried vehemently, "I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!" Emily Brontë distorts many common elements in Wuthering Heights to enhance the quality of her book. One of the distortions is Heathcliff's undying love for Catherine Earnshaw. Also, Brontë perverts the vindictive hatred that fills and runs Heathcliff's life after he loses Catherine. Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights, set in the countryside of England’s 1700’s, features a character named Heathcliff, who is brought into the Earnshaw family as a young boy and quickly falls into a passionate, blinding romance with the Earnshaw’s daughter, Catherine. However, Heathcliff is soon crushed by this affection when his beloved chooses the company of another man rather than his own. For the remainder of the novel he exudes a harsh, aversive attitude that remains perduring until his demise that is induced by the loss of his soulmate, and in turn the bereavement of the person to whom the entirety of his being and his very own self were bound.
The gothic genre created both a lot of films and novels, some of which are debatable as to if they were categorized properly. The Films Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights directed by Peter Kosminsky, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein directed by Kenneth Branagh are both based on novels. Both films display many different ideas, and are structured differently, but Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is an archetype for the gothic genre. Although the two are very different films, through the use of gloom and horror, film techniques, and heroic traits, both films are able to prove themselves part of the gothic genre by displaying many gothic elements.

The love and affection between the characters are what drives the characters into the actions they conduct. Heathcliff’s arrival at Wuthering Heights affected Catherine’s behaviors and actions. Nelly explains, “She was much too fond of Heathcliff. The greatest punishment we could invent for her was to keep separate from him” (42). Eventually, it brings the two great pleasure when they run away to the moors and remain there all day. While Catherine is communicating with Nelly about the marriage proposal, Heathcliff hears her comment about his social class. Heathcliff assumes that Catherine will marry Edgar Linton, so the absence of Catherine’s love results in Heathcliff’s runaway. He does not hear Catherine’s passionate remarks about him. She explains to Nelly, “…so he shall never know how I love him; and that, not because he’s handsome, Nelly, but because he’s more myself than I am. Having grown up at Wuthering Heights, Catherine, Hindley, and Heathcliff all suffer from a lack of love and structure. Wuthering Heights is a very bleak and dark place, that isn’t too happy. None of them found happiness until they fled from that dreary place that they call home. Heathcliff is grumpy and mean, and wants to inflict that on everyone else around him. Hurt people, hurt people. As opposed to Thrushcross Grange, which is more structured. Edgar and Isabella are more compassionate people, because of the love that they received from their parents. It also leaves them vulnerable to Catherine and Heathcliff’s aggressive nature, as well as a ploy in Heathcliff’s plan. Knowing this, Catherine is only stuck with two options-marry Heathcliff or Edgar. Based on the decision she made (good or bad, depending on the person) it started a spiral of events that currently effects Linton, Hareton, and Cathy. The same thing is to be said about Cathy. Cathy is still in the same environment. Though she is growing up at Thrushcross Grange, and be raised by her father and Nelly.
