In 2013, just shy of my 17th birthday, I planned a day trip with two of my friends to see The Phantom of the Opera in New York. At this point in my life, I was entirely unaccustomed to large cities, such as New York City, and felt excited to experience the bustle I expected. While in the city, a woman informed me about methods to avoid the crime so intertwined with life in the city and introduced me to the concept that, just as New York City held many attractions for tourists, it also held some dangers as well. This idea takes pride of place in Edward Jones’ short story, “Young Lions” and its discussion of Caesar Matthews. In “Young Lions,” readers follow the protagonist, Caesar Matthews and his introduction to a life of crime in Washington D.C. As a teenager, Caesar’s father essentially disowns him and Caesar moves in with Sherman Wheeler, a confidence man that teaches Caesar about robbing people without getting caught. After Caesar completes his first “job” of removing his belongings from his father’s home, he meets Carol, a woman who develops a relationship with Caesar and falls in love with him. Caesar schemes to rob a “feeble-minded” woman, Anna, and involves Carol to wheedle the money from Anna. Horrified at her involvement in Caesar’s repugnant actions, Carol cannot react as Caesar wants her to after taking the money. Once this becomes clear, Caesar becomes enraged with Carol, strikes her repeatedly in a park, and threatens to shoot her. During this violence, Caesar “realized that if he beat her with the pistol, that, too, would not surprise her. And had he shot her, in the face or through the heart, she would not have been surprised at that either” (Jones 76). Following this attack, Carol leaves the park in tears with the full realization of the type of person Caesar is. Ultimately, Caesar is left alone and has no one to offer him …show more content…
The woman I met spoke pragmatically about avoiding crime in the city and this, more than anything else, depicted the prevalence of crime that, having grown up in a much smaller town, I had never experienced. The unbreakable grips that New York City’s denizens maintained on their belongings while engulfed in throngs of people suddenly made absolute sense in a way that I felt almost uncomfortable with. “Young Lions” also illuminates the frequency of crime in cities and, perhaps more disturbingly, the forethought individuals devote to stealing from others. While following Anna, Caesar explains that “for two months he had secretly placed himself in her life, doing all the scoping out, the drudgery that had once been up to Sherman” (Jones 63). Focusing on two early examples, Poe’s “Murders in the Rue Morgue” and Hoffmann’s “Mademoiselle de Scudery,” both set in Paris, his sophisticated essay illuminates the “cityness” or framed constraint that renders the city a backdrop conducive to murder—such as the city’s crowded, constricted nature, promoting vertical rather than outward movement and increasing hostility and the fact that so much urban life occurs at night, a reversal of the natural order and facilitating illicit activity. He compels us to look in new ways both at the city and at detective fiction.
William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is a story full of manipulation and jealousy that changes the way people think. Ancient Rome had umpteen different ways of handling situations that, in today’s world, would be considered unethical; such as battles that were very much horrifying and vivid. However, these battles were not important with the development of the plot. Shakespeare uses various ways of the idea of manipulation and betrayal to lead readers into the rest of the narrative.
It was a dark, menacing night as she stood there in the shadows. Waiting for the finale of the show that was playing, she glanced toward the exit through which people would soon be leaving. The rich, as patrons of the theatre house, promised her a salary at least for today. Her tattered clothes revealed the effects of personal destitution; the emaciated frame, that presently existed, harked back upon a body she must have once possessed. Driven by poverty to the realms of "painted cohorts," she makes up her face daily, distinguishing her life from the respected (264). She is an outcast, a leper, a member of the marginalized in society; she envelops the most degraded of positions and sins against her body in order to survive. As she looks up, her eyes reflect a different kind of light, a glimmer of beauty that has not yet faded despite her present conditions. She was, at one time, a "virtuous" woman, most likely scorned by a dishonest love. Finding no comfort or pity for her prior mistakes, she must turn to the streets and embrace the inevitable - the dishonor and shame from her previous engagement will follow her unto death. Shunned from society she becomes the woman who sells herself for money and sadly finds no love. She is the abandoned, the betrayed, and the lost, embarrassed girl; she is "of the painted cohorts," the female prostitute of the streets (264).

The Chicago World Fair brought about through the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus landing in America has posed significant value and worth to the city of Chicago. Over a six-month period, more than 26 million visitors from all over the world would flock to the fairgrounds to experience the rebuilt and vibrant city of Chicago. The 600-acre fairground would have housed 200 buildings that showcased new food, art, technology, and entertainment. Chicago became known as the White City, a place of freedom, grandeur, and security. But unbeknownst to fairgoers, there was a serial killer among them. While Dr. H.H. Holmes lured his innocent victims to his “Castle”, just blocks away architect Daniel Burnham built up the dream city of Chicago. Both these men operated at the same time in history, simply blocks apart, both creating legacies that carry to this day. Burnham and Holmes are two side of the coin of human nature. In “The Devil in White City” Erik Larson’s juxtaposition of Burnham and Holmes, and the Black City and the White City, contributes to the understanding of human nature, that one cannot be good without having done evil, and that good and evil are viewed as complementary in their mutual dependence.

Calpurnia attempts to scare Caesar into staying at the house instead of going to the Capitol. She begins with ethos to establish her credibility and justify her concerns. Calpurnia “never stood on ceremonies”, but now they “fright her,” juxtaposing that the omens never scared her, but are frightening enough that she now is attentive to them. Because women were not as powerful in Rome, Calpurnia further credits her argument by including the “watch.” Using selection of detail, Calpurnia Even the guards, who are men, have seen the strange events, and they are scared. Since even men are scared, it should implicate to Caesar that he should be scared as well. Calpurnia sees a lioness, an image, normally associated with strength and courage, “whelp[ing] in the streets.” The lioness is essentially crying, scared of something. Caesar is also strong, but should be scared as well. When ethos fails to impact Caesar, Calpurnia switches to using pathos to try and scare Caesar. “Fierce fiery warriors [fighting] upon the clouds,” is an image that connotes war. In war, there is death and Caesar should be afraid of death. When you associate anything with New York City it is usually the extraordinary buildings that pierce the sky or the congested sidewalks with people desperate to shop in the famous stores in which celebrities dwell. Even with my short visit there I found myself lost within the Big Apple. The voices of the never-ending attractions call out and envelop you in their awe. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a young child on a shopping spree in a candy store. Although your feet swelter from the continuous walking, you find yourself pressing on with the yearning to discover the 'New York Experience'.

It is easy to fall into the trap of believing that Times Square has always been the magical place that it is today. This however is far from the reality, and truth of Times Square’s unique history. Makagon (2004) writes in his book, that city officials became increasingly aware of the importance of enriching the general atmosphere of Times Square. (p. 51). City officials wanted Times Square to be seen more than solely a place of crime, and a city full of porno theatres (Makagon, 2004, p. 51). How did Times Square go from a trashy city, to one of the most popular borough’s in the country? This incredible change is characterized by the term, “Disneyfication” (Makagon, 2004, p.50). Disneyfication turned Times Square from a “seedy porno district”, into a place where entertainment is described as, “family friendly” (Makagon, 2004, p.51). It appears this systematic change did wonders for the “city that never sleeps”. The city known for its Broadway shows, amazing restaurants, and the dazzling lights was once irrelevant in the country which is a under looked aspect to Times Square
