Analysis of Childhood Obesity in the US

Childhood obesity in America is a growing disease that is slowly taking over the world because of the fast food industry, school lunch programs, and parental control. The number of overweight and obese children has increased at an outstanding rate over the past years, and there is no chance of it slowing down unless we do something about it. The childhood obesity rate started to increase during the mid- 1970s. “According to the author of The Metamorphoses of Fat- a History of Obesity, one in five American kids and teens are overweight or obese; That is triple the rate in the 1960’s” (23). Obesity is causing a broad range of health problems for these children that shouldn’t be happening until they reach their adulthood. Some of these health problems include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol levels. Not only does childhood obesity cause health problems, but also psychological ones too. Obese children are more likely to develop a low self- esteem and depression because of their negative body image. People all over the nation are asking why is this issue increasing and who is to blame? Many people believe that the fast food industry is to blame because of the food that is so high in calories, while others believe that the food served during school hours are to blame. Besides those two factors, most people think that childhood obesity is the parent’s fault since they are the ones that provide these unhealthy options to their children. The fast food industry, school lunch programs/ vending machines, and parental control are the top three contributors as to why childhood obesity is on the rise, but which one plays the biggest role?

... family activity by throwing around a ball in the backyard, or getting together to play a quick basketball game. By exercising as a family, a child has more incentive to be active. The amount of time spent watching TV or using the computer should be limited to less than 2 hours a day. It is very important for parents and children to know how to prevent childhood obesity before it is too late.
Childhood obesity is a very serious and common problem in the United States. America’s children are exposed to these high calorie foods and unfortunately take part in their diet because of their parents. As parents, they have control over what foods they bring to the household and are the key role models in their children’s lives. Parents should encourage their children to have a nutritious and active lifestyle. Overall, Parents are held responsible for their child’s health.
