People can also be manipulated to act a certain way or believe in something. When a person is manipulated by someone, he or she hide their intent or real purpose (Sutiu 102). Manipulation is the more devious method of influencing someone. Unlike persuasion, the manipulator 's intentions are not known, and definitely are not good (Sutiu 105). Slogans are the main tool used by advertisers today to influence our behavior. In addition, after reading Brave New World, it is apparent that the slogans used today are no different than the slogans created by the World State leaders. Slogans are everywhere, but what exactly is a slogan and why are they so effective? Advertising slogans are intentionally short, memorable phrases used in advertising campaigns (Talabi 31). Simply noted by author Dave Lakhani, "short sentences and simple words sell" (146). So it is no mistake, that "slogans are designed to be that sticky, catchy repeatable copy or phrase that actually then starts to evolve into visual mnemonics and tremendous shortcuts" (Soat par. 8). According to author, Felix Talabi, the shorter the better (31) so advertisers need to be clever with the few words they will combine to make that slogan. A slogan must be concise in order to be effective, the less words, the easier to remember (Talabi 33). That is the reason why slogans can easily persuade and manipulate people on a subconscious level. According to advertising expert, Melissa Tracey, "good slogans are notorious for getting stuck in your head" (par. 4). They are short, catchy, and easy to remember and repeat. Next, the two creative concepts behind slogans will be explored, and how they work to both persuade and manipulate. It is well know that if a person wants to remember something, he or she keep repeating it to himself or herself. It eventually is embedded in memory for future recall. Also, there is the belief that if an individual says something or hear something enough, he or she will actually will believe it. It is this same concept that one of the world leaders in the novel, Mustapha Mond, utilized with his students, the world caste members. In Brave New World, Mustapha Mond repeatedly tells the students, "but every one belongs to everyone else." "The students nodded, emphatically agreeing with a statement which upwards of sixty-two thousand repetitions in the dark had made them accept, not merely as true, but as axiomatic, self-evident, utterly indisputable" (Huxley 40). Another world state leader in the book, Bernard Marx, who taught subconscious sleep teaching, said: "One hundred repetitions three nights a week for four years. Sixty-two thousand four hundred repetitions make one truth. Idiots!" (Huxley 47). Most advertisements as the ones I mentioned above use at least two or more appeals to persuade their intended audience to buy the product donate money, go see a movie, go to a restaurant, or switch brands. The use of logos seems to be the most effective way to promote something, by giving the facts and logical reasoning people are more likely to want what is being offered. Commercials have a short amount of time to engage the audience in their product. The use of rhetorical appeal helps to keep the audience’s attention to the details of the commercial and to make them think about what is being shown or heard. All in all, the book Age of Propaganda: The Use and Abuse of Persuasion by Partkanis and Aronson points out the flaws in the advertising and marketing methods. The purpose of the four stratagems in marketing is to most effectively catch consumers’ attention and get them to buy their product. The strategies are pre-persuasion, source credibility, message and emotion. The authors point out that the race of corporations to beat one another to consumers has created a world of advertising that is cluttered with tactics that take away the truth of the product. If this trend continues, and these stratagems continue to be installed, our world will be littered with over-the-top and pointless campaigns.
Advertisements cannot triumph unless they capture our attention. Advertisers use different strategies like slogans, pictures,claims so those advertising messages do not forgot by the audience and persuade people to buy the product being sold. The language used in these various forms of media has a huge impact on their effects on the consumer. William Lutz, the author of “With these words,I can sell you anything” and Charles A. O 'Neill, author of, “The language of advertising” have contrasting views about the system of advertising. Lutz and O’Neill have different approaches of persuading audience about their views on language manipulation in advertisements.

A person is subjected to numerous advertisements throughout their everyday lives via television, applications, radios and the internet. Due to the massive numbers of advertisements seen by the public, advertisement designers pose manipulative tactics known as propaganda techniques. As seen in the article “Propaganda Techniques in Today’s Advertising,” the author Ann McClintock states and lists the seven tactics of propaganda used and seen unknowingly in common advertising. McClintock shares “One study reports that each of us, during an average day, is exposed to over five hundred advertising claims of various types” (McClintock 205). This factor causes advertisements to incorporate propaganda into their selling of products. Two advertisements which are composed for opposite audiences do not only contrast but are similar in the form in which they are portrayed to the audience.
Propaganda in today’s urban world is everywhere, taking on many forms found in magazines, newspapers, smart phone applications, and billboards. It is not bounded to what we may only think as being used as radical, totalitarian persuasion by countries that are very different from our own. Ann McClintock defines propaganda as “a systematic effort to influence people’s opinions, to win them over to a certain view or side.” We certainly saw during World War II, but propaganda is arguably more popular now than ever before, and the companies are skillfully using techniques they know will draw their customers in. One of my favorite commercials to watch is the Chick-Fil-A commercials. Their commercials are very ironic but at the same time interesting and entertaining. The main purpose of their commercial is to persuade an audience to go and buy their product or maybe convince an audience to come back again and buy more of their product. They are able to influence their audience through the use of rhetorical elements. Rhetorical elements include: the rhetor, discourse, audience, and rhetorical triangle. Their commercials don’t necessarily target one particular audience, they incorporate different ideas into their commercial to target different audiences such as families, and football fans.
As expressed in the previous chapter, there is no clear and concise definition as to what exactly is and is not persuasion. Therefore, persuasion has several names and meanings making it difficult to define this complex topic. In this chapter, the author examines some of the reasons as to why defining this phenomenon is such a hassle. To do this, the author first describes two important factors that clarify the source of differences among definitions of persuasion, which are the ideas of pure versus borderline persuasion. Following these characteristics, the author presents five other controversial factors that also contribute to the differences among definitions of persuasion.

To skillfully use the power of manipulation a person must use another person's weaknesses. By using a person's emotions against them, they can be manipulated with ease. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
Every person has their own individual beliefs and values that they live by. There is a line that one believes they will never cross. However, people can also be easily persuaded to abandon these values if the reasoning is fair enough. This is human nature. To manipulate someone is to use or change them for a specific purpose. In Shakespeare's play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, he illustrates how easily people can change their minds through manipulation. He conveys how people can be manipulated, how they manipulate themselves, and how they manipulate others.

According to Kurtz and Dave (2010), in so doing, they aim at either increasing the demand of the product, to inform the consumer of the existence, or to differentiate that product from other existing one in the market. Therefore, the advertiser’s aim should at all times try as much as possible to stay relevant and to the point.
