Lewis speaks about the lack of belief until the belief is tested in reality. Likewise, Frederic Henry, the protagonist in the novel A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, is an American officer in the Italian army during World War I. He struggles to maintain the balance between his war efforts during World War I and his relationship with Catherine Barkley. Throughout the war and his relationship, Henry reflects the “Lost Generation” where people plod through life with no sense of purpose, no belief system, and a loss of morality. Though, as he finds his belief in love and his moral standing, he unearths bravery as more than an emotion, but rather a moral trait. He discovers the true essence of bravery through the war’s brutal nature and Catherine’s psychological state.
