General comments: From my observations of Uways I can tell that he is
generally a medium standard player. From the evidence in the boxes
above it is clear that he has a weak short serve.

Observation of a player in a game and practice

For any Badminton player it is necessary for he or she to perform a
serve, smash, clear and a drop shot on whichever hand necessary in the
situation.

To be a good badminton player there are several fitness components
that are vital.

· Flexibility: the ability to get into an appropriate position so that
a shot can be hit correctly and accurately.

Factors That Affect Performance

There are three main factors that can affect a player’s performance
these factors are:

· Physical

· Social

· Mental

Physical Factors

Somatotype: there are three types of somatotype; Endomorph, Ectomorph
and Mesomorph.

Depending on what type of body shape one has depends on how they can
play a certain sport. A tall person may be able to perform better
smashes and reach higher shots with ease while a muscular person may
be able to hit fast powerful shots. Ectomorph and mesomorph people may
have positive points to their body shape that may result in something
that improves their play however Endomorph people are people who are
not so active and have a lot of fat and their body size may hinder
their performance. Not everyone falls exactly into one category some
people may be in between two different somatotypes and they may have a
different kind of skill that they can easily perform.

Drugs: Drugs can alter a person’s performance in many ways, there are
many different types of drugs that are used to have alternate affects
on the body depending on what drug one uses their performance can be
improved or also hindered. An example of a drug used to improve
someone’s capability in sport is an Anabolic steroid, this drug is
used to help to enhance strength and endurance, the side effect of
using this drug is that it causes liver damage. People who take part
in sport at high levels and compete with people are regularly tested
to see if they have taken drugs to enhance their fitness, the main
reason for this is that it is unfair on all of the other people who do
not take drugs and train naturally.

Training: The amount of training that someone does and the type pf
training they can do can play a great role in sport, there are many
types of training to help players become better at sport:

· Practicing skills over and over again can improve a players skill

· Running is a type of training that can help build up stamina so a
player can last through a whole game and does not begin to slack in
their efforts

· Weight training or press-ups could be done so that the player can
build strength to hit powerful shots.

Injury: Injury can affect players in many ways these affects are
mostly always negative. Injuries can be picked up in many ways and
many parts of the body can be affected, these can result in the player
being out of play and training therefore they can sometimes gain
weight and weaken their skills. They may also have to take it easy so
they do not injure themselves again.

Diet: The food that sportspeople is highly important because they need
to maintain a healthy well balanced diet.

· Proteins are required so that the body can repair itself and help
the growth of muscles

· Carbohydrates are good for the body because

· Fats, sugary and fatty foods are good for the body because they
provide quick and easy energy, they should only be taken in small
amounts because overindulgence can eventually lead to obesity

· Fibre is good for the digestive system as is helps to digest food
quicker and eases the passage of food form the body.

Social Factors

Support from friends and family: Support form family and friends is
good because it is a form of external motivation that helps give a
player the will to win, it help the player gain confidence if he knows
that there are people backing him.

Culture: The culture and ethnicity of a persona can affect how good
they are when playing certain games there are a range of reason for
this:

· They may have role model that have the same background as them and
they may inspire the person to do similar things in sports

· They may come from country where a certain sport is highly popular
and played in abundance therefore they may be good in that sport, e.g.
English people are enthusiastic about football and therefore the
people form England could be good at football because nearly everyone
is interested in football

Environment: depending on what climate you live in or in what kind of
local area you live in could also affect how much you take part in a
certain sport. If there are people from hot countries they may take
part in more of the out door sports as opposed to people from colder
countries who may take part in other kinds of sport played indoor.

Socializing: The people that one socializes with can affect them
because in most cases they will play the same sports and also play
together, the friends that one socializes with may look upon a certain
sport with a negative attitude and this might put somebody off taking
part in that sport.

Peer pressure: This can affect what sport a player does and how well
or how badly they perform. Other people maybe in the same age group as
them or something, similar people who can be looked upon can apply
pressure upon people to do things. Some people motivate themselves to
do well in sports so that people can look to them and they can be
popular. This is not the only thing peer pressure can do, if other
people see another sport as not so good it may put another person away
from doing it because they do not want to be seen in a position in
which other people dislike them.

Mental Factors

Motivation- Motivation internal and external motivation is highly
important for sport people as this is what normally helps people do
better and go on to win. If someone is motivated internally they are
setting themselves a goal for a set reason and they feel that they
have to achieve it therefore they try to make themselves do well and
achieve their ambition. Extrinsic motivation is the motivation
received by people who are supporting you, this could be you family
and friends, this type of motivation helps a person gain confidence
and realise that they do not have to win for themselves but also for
the people who are relying upon them to win. Intrinsic motivation can
also go against the player because if the player does not meet the
goals and win the people who are supporting him may not be happy with
him or some people may criticize him making him feel bad. Intrinsic
motivation can go against a person because once again if they don’t
achieve their goals they will loose confidence in themselves and
probably loose the will to exercise and even the will to win.

Concentration: Concentration can affect a player because a in a sort
like badminton a player may be required to keep his eye on the shuttle
so that he knows where to go and how to perform the shot. If there is
large crowd that are watching him and making noises his concentration
may wonder resulting in him making a fatal mistake. Also if someone
has something on their mind there concentration would be on that as
they would be worrying about something or they may be excited about
something as opposed to concentrating on the game.

Stress: if someone was stressed out then they would be worrying about
something or would have other things on their mind, they could be
emotional or have a lot of things to take care of and this may hinder
their concentration and accuracy resulting them loosing vital points,
also if someone is not paying full attention they may be susceptible
to make a mistake and cause them self an injury. An example of this in
a game of badminton could be that there may be a doubles game and the
player may forget to call for it and get in the way of the shuttle,
the other player may have tried to strike the shuttle and may
accidentally hit the player.

Will to win: The will to win can really affect someone, because if
someone has the will to win they will most probably put as much effort
as they can.

Criticism: Criticism is a negative thing because a player may not have
had a good game and people may have started to talk about him in an
ill mannered way however the way that the player reacts to this
depends on the outcome. The player may listen to the comments made
about him and feel sad and loose hope in him self or the player may
listen to the comments and think that he has to prove them wrong by
giving more of an effort for the next match.

List the Players Major Strengths

· Long serve

· Clear

Uways’s best shot was the long serve, evident from the analysis he
correctly performed eight out of ten long serves. While observing
Uways’s I saw that his long serves were long and high and landed near
to and in the back tramlines. His timing was good as he dropped the
shuttle and hit it just before the shuttle made contact with the
racket. His strength was mainly in his ability to hit the shuttle high
up with power and make it g far back to the back of the court. He was
using the correct technique and flicking the shuttle at the end, he
also knew how to disguise his shot by moving the racket up slowly then
flicking it powerfully

Uways’s second best shot was the clear he had 7 successful clears out
of ten, he used the correct technique and most of his shots reached
the back of the court. He was good at hitting shots high with a good
amount of power. Before hitting the shuttle he got beneath the shuttle
and stepped into the shot.

The Players Major Weaknesses

Uways was weak at short serves, as my tick sheet shows that’s only
three of his ten shots were a success. Although he played them with
less power they were too high and very easy for the opponent to smash
or return. The technique for a good short serve is to hit it lightly
to keep it as low as possible and aim to try and place it at the very
edge of the service box. He could further improve his shot by lowering
the trajectory and gently pushing the shuttle as opposed to flicking
it.

Another weakness that Uways has is his drop shot. The tick sheet shows
that he only had four successful drop shots out of ten. This shot has
to be played at the correct time and the correct place, the opponent
should be an air distance from the net and he should be fairly close
to the net. Uways did not time his drop shots; sometimes they were too
powerful land the opponent returned them to him. Uways also tried to
attempt a drop shot from the middle of the net and his opponent also
returned this shot. Uways has t learn when to time the shot and how
hard he should hit it.

Ways of improving the main weakness

Short Serve

The short serve has to be played lightly with low power and has to go
low over the net and land swiftly. It has to land near to the edge of
the front side of the service box. The sort o f shot that should be
used should be a push.

1. Main technique

The main technique is to play the shot lightly with the push shot, the
shot has to be hit fairly lightly and has to go low over the net and
land pretty soon after the shuttle ahs gone over the net.

2. Simple practice

A simple way to practice this shot is to get a racket and a shuttle
and attempt to play the shot into the opposite service box. A good way
of making your accuracy better is o place a racket in the box and try
to aim to land near the racket or to really boost accuracy try to land
on the racket, you do not have to do this yet, all you have to
concentrate on is trying to hit a shot that is low and lands in the
service box. Introduce points for performing successful moves and aim
to make a certain amount of points so that you can get better at the
skill you are practicing.

3. Practice Harder

To practice harder you could, lay some hoops in certain places in the
opposite sides service boxes and try to aim the shuttle so that it
lands inside the hoops. Te hoops could be placed anywhere near to the
beginning of the box of any of the first two corners.

4. Extend the drill further

You could extend your badminton drill further by adding to hoops in
the corners of the service box in which you have to land the shuttle.


5. Try it with a closed practice

After you have tried to land the shuttle in two hoops placed in the
service box try to narrow down your practice to a certain area, after
you have practiced one area try another so that u become good at
hitting the shuttle into many places.

6. Introduce an opponent with certain conditions

After you have tried all of these various drill and learnt the shot,
try adding an opponent. Try playing the drop shot to them and see in
they can return your shot, but make it easy to begin with by adding
conditions. These conditions could be that the player has to stay in
a certain place if they can then it means your drop shots needs to be
practiced and developed further and if the opponent cannot return the
shot then It will probably mean that you have learnt the correct
technique to play the shot. Try this with more then one opponent and
try playing opponents of different abilities so that you really do
know how well you are playing.

7. Then play a proper match

if you are happy about the way you are playing and you feel that you
can perform successful shots, try putting all of these shots into a
real game situation in which you have to perform shots with accuracy
and good timing to score points. If you win or have a close match then
you will know that your badminton is of a good level.

Improving Another Weakness

Drop Shot

Uways has a very poor drop shot; he hit it at the wrong time

1. Main technique

The main technique is to play the shot gently also adding some curl by
slicing it with the tap shot, the shot has to be hit fairly lightly
and has to be very close to the net and land straight away.

2. Simple practice

A simple way to practice this shot is to get another person to keep on
playing you shots that you have to return using the drop shot. You
could jus play a rally in which the opponent hits it lightly and low
over the net allowing you to go and play the drop shot

3. Practice Harder

To practice harder you could, still maintain the player feeding shot
but u could place a hoop down on the other side of the net so that you
know where to land the shuttle when you are playing the shot.

4. Extend the drill further

The drill could be further extended by making the player have to land
the shuttle in an even narrower space along the net. You could do this
but putting a long piece of thread along the other side of the net on
the court and you could try to land the shuttle before the piece of
thread each time you play the shot


5. Try it with a closed practice

You could attempt this drill in a closed practice because the person
playing a shot to you could play the shot to your right or left hand
each time you could try to jus perfect upon that shot I that position.
After you have done this u could still keep the drill closed bout u
could practice the shot in an alternate position.

6. Introduce an opponent with certain conditions

To practice a drop shot you always need to practice with an n
opponent; however when you have progressed to a certain level of your
game practicing with your opponent would help you out. At this stage
you may still not be good enough to go straight into a proper game
situation in which you play for points. In this situation you could
add a player who is playing against you and not just giving you shots
that you could return as drop shots. To begin with you could start
with certain conditions with the opponent for example the opponent has
to stay in the middle of his service box and one of his feet ahs to
remain in one place. The opponent could then serve and you could then
return this until you receive a shot that is adequate for returning as
a drop shot, in this case perform the drop shot and see if the player
can come forward from the middle of the court and return the shot. If
the opponent returned the shot then the player would know that he
still ahs to practice his shot however if the opponent did not return
it the player would know that his shot is of a good standards. Also
the player could play with different opponents so that he is tested
against people of different abilities. This would be good because the
player gets a large amount of feedback upon how good his shot is.

7. Then play a proper match

The final stage of the training programme could be to play a proper
match. In this match the player would be able to use a whole range of
moves to try a win points. Also at the appropriate times he could
perform the drop shot and see if his opponent was able to return it.
There are two ways of seeing if a player is good from a match. These
are if the opponent is able to hit the shots back or not or
alternatively if he performs enough successful shots to win the match
