As a new unwed mother myself, I know the news that you will soon be a single mother can be daunting to say the least. Being a single mother is still highly stigmatized in today’s society, even though more affluent women are choosing artificial insemination as their method of starting a family without a man. Finding out about an unplanned pregnancy can often come with little support and much condemnation; the implications of these two factors can be detrimental to the mother and her future child. Being young, Black, female and a mom can seem like an insurmountable challenge if the proper resources are not put into place. In order to solve the pervasive issues faced by single, black moms and propel them into self-actualization a program must be geared toward supporting them in reaching the higher levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. In part, self-actualization is the manner in which a person finds purpose in life by fulfilling their potential, through a journey that entails personal growth and discovery. The proposal for this organization is to support single black mothers through the continuum of self-actualization for them and their children. According to the USDA as of 2013, 34.4% of single mothers found themselves facing food insecurity . The proposed program would organize a food pantry by building partnerships with major grocery stores within the area. The program would also begin a community garden that the mothers would be in charge of; from there a co-op would be started with other local gardeners and farmers. Additionally, the proposed program would recruit local chef and dieticians to teach the mothers how to shop for produce on a fixed budget and how to prepare healthy meals. Safety Needs: In order for someone to be safe they need shelter, yet The Center of National Homelessness reported that nearly 75% of all homeless families are headed by single mothers . This program would offer emergency transitional housing to single mothers and their kids who found themselves homeless. To ensure they are able to find housing we will create partnerships with apartment complexes that offer affordable housing and develop a plan for each mother to be able to secure long-term housing with them.
