My college education has never been that of a traditional student per se, I am 40 years old; I am married with three children and maintain a professional career as a nurse. Even when obtaining my baccalaureate degree I still maintained the non-traditional status, I was 24 married and had a six month old daughter and worked part-time as a medical assistant. My learning is from the humanist perspective in that I believe in thinking for myself as an individual, I perceive with my senses and understand with my mind, and I am self directed (Merriam, Caffarella and Baumgartner, 2007). Additionally, I am the non-traditional student, the lifelong learner, the adult learner and the strategic system of assumptions that make up Andragogy.
Forty-five years have passed since Malcolm Knowles offered his description and technique for adult learning. Andragogy is the “art and science of helping adults learn” (Merriam, Caffarella & Baumgartner, 2007, p. 84). Knowles is the founding father of andragogy as he proposed six assumptions...

While no two people will view the world the same, nor will two people have the same educational philosophy. This author has identified a learning theory that has applied to their aspect of life/education. The work of Malcolm Knowles has greatly influenced many in the world of education; he has defined how this adult learner applied the assumptions in his theory. Furthermore, the purpose of adult education has been acknowledged through this learner’s angle. Also, knowledge has also been defined, as well as the roles of the educator and learner. In the words of Albert Einstein, learning starts the day we are brought into this world and ends the day we exit out of it.
