As an ideal manager of management for aging services, it is important to have a framework with core competencies, which my staff and I abide by. These constructs will provide an aging culture that is a pleasure to work in or be a resident of. These core competencies include a considerate communication style, trust, values, and many other principles that create this framework for a management of aging services position.
As an effective supervisor, it is important to understand and internalize the aging organization’s vision and mission. Eikenberry and Harris (2011) write in their book, From Bud to Boss, that it is the responsibility of the manager to understand and accept the organization’s mission. With this deep rooted understanding of the vision, as a director, the employees and residents in the facility will be better served (Eikenberry & Harris, 2011). Furthermore, I believe that an exemplary leader should focus on the SCARF model described by David Rock in his book Managing with the Brain in Mind. It is an excellent model that describes social qualities that administrators should utilize in their repertoire (Rock, 2009). Rock (2009) describes these five qualities as status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness. As a supervisor, I will focus on making sure that status does not negatively affect my employees, and that they are always certain about their responsibilities (Rock, 2009). Lastly, I will give my employees autonomy to make their own decisions concerning their positions in the organization, and I will be relatable and fair with concerns about my staff’s wellbeing (Rock, 2009). With a vision and a model for communication I feel better equipped to lead a staff in a service that caters to older adults....

...challenging because there are many aspects of the organization that have to be considered. A director in this field has to be passionate about their work and show competence in leading a team of dedicated employees. These core competencies, which I have outlined, I believe, are my constructs and principles that I would follow as an executive administrator. I think following a framework outlining core principles sets a leader 's position up for success. If I feel confident with my beliefs than that assurance will penetrate my staff and everyone should feel competent in their work as well. My goal, as a manager, is to have an organization run by a dedicated enthusiastic staff who enjoys working with the residents living in the facility. I think the way to reach this aspiration is to follow the core competencies, which I have created as a springboard for success.
