Background and Issues This case was about an ethical situation that George Stein, a summer intern at Eastern Dairy, faced at one of the nigh shifts he participated in. George was raised in a middle class family in which living expenses were not the primary concerns for all. Instead, George showed greater interests in gathering with friends, especially his girlfriend Cathy, rather than working hard in school. In order to have extra money for dating, he spent every summer in working part time in the local community. At the time when the case happened, George was working at Eastern Dairy, a local ice cream mix company serving the metropolitan area. While George’s shift had no on-site manger to supervised, he and his teammates usually sought advices from one member of the team, Paul. George was responsible to remove containers of mix as they came down the line and stacked them in the appropriate places. The first approach was obviously attracting. As Paul’s opinion, since all products would go through the pasteurization process eventually, no further bacterial was expected in the output. Without concerns of public health, doing so not only save 500 gallons of remaining mix, which were significant loss to the company, but also allowing them to finish the shift on schedule and leave. Since there was no manager on site, this could be tempting to George as it was terrified for him to take on the responsibility of wasting so much of the company’s produces as a part-time intern. He needed the job to save for his wedding with Cathy. Moreover, being one of the only six employees at night shift, following Paul’s suggestion not only allowed them to leave on time but also avoided to be complained by co-workers for any extra
