An effective campus library creates an inviting and an interactive learning environment. The school library is central to learning and plays a key role to encourage innovations, curiosity, and problem solving. The campus library is not known as an interactive learning center, but as a place to check out books. Our campus library barley reaches the standard level because its size is not adequate to accommodate the students and faculty members in the way that is needed. In current use, the library is used incorrectly and no longer a public good. New ideas and programs should be added to increase the productivity. When presented the research project, students go to Google and search the topic resulting in over one million websites. “They tended to overuse Google and misuse scholarly databases. They preferred simple database searches to other methods of discovery” (Kolowich). College students do not have time to sit in a library and do research. Constant pressure from school work and work causes time to be a valuable thing at a commuter school. They need to find the fastest and easiest way to finish a project. “Now more than ever, academic librarians should seek to ‘save time for the reader’” (Kolowich). Librarians either spend too much time hovering over students or not at all. “Librarians tend to overestimate the research skills of some of their students, which can result in interactions that leave students feeling intimated and alienated” (Kolowich). Our campus library does not work efficiently, so students do not want to spend time in it. The result means their work is getting half done and they aren’t taking education seriously. The campus library should post pictures, signs and the librarians should walk around to offer help to those in need of time management and ways to get their work done faster. Also, our campus library needs more study rooms, offer workshops for study skills, and control the amount of people who aren’t using the library for the right reasons, such as a place to chat with
Galileo Galilei was very meddlesome when it came to the scientific community. He is one of the world’s most renowned and possibly greatest scientist that contributed to the scientific revolution. Galileo’s thirst for knowledge was not necessarily a good thing, due to his devotion for science, he was condemn from the Catholic Church (Michael N. Marcus) and alienated for not fitting social norms; ironically becoming an outcast of the society he was trying to better. Using one of the worlds all time horror classics Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, and one of the greatest films of all time Forrest Gump, they both show us how the pursuit of what is known to the individual as the best and correct course of action could be truly dangerous. While Galileo was motivated by his commitment to the truth, both Forrest Gump and Frankenstein’s monster are driven by love and a childlike desire to explore the world around them. Ironically, acting on love, care, and innocence would have nearly accurately been portrayed by Bon Scott as a “highway to hell” (AC/DC).
One of the things that I have learned is how to use different resources at college. One of the resources is the library. Since the library is closed right now I learned how to use the online library. I did not know how to use the library website at first, and know I know how to use it better. I use the website for almost all my classes. I use it for finding articles, and doing research. I think this resource will be the most helpful to me, because I can use the online resources to find articles, books, movies, and music. If I need to do research on a topic, I can always request a book and check it out from the library. The COL 101 class has also helped me with my future.
This library system is utilizing all the technologies and materials available to them to serve the community in the best way. Despite certain social indicators and demographic statistics indicating that the library should not be overly utilized, it is thriving and is heavily in use. There are areas that the library can look to improve based on statistical evidence, such as reaching out to the low income population and the over 55 years age group. This library seems to be meeting numerous needs for a wide range of patrons, and doing it well.
People have all different kinds of values, wants, needs, long-term goals, and short-term goals. Their differences come from many places such as religion or age. These differences are what makes each individuals values, wants, and needs make them unique to each person individually. My values, wants, needs, long-term, and short-term goals are all unique to myself.
My name is David Brown and I am the starting quarterback for the Nittany Lions here a Penn State University. I am writing to you on behalf of my fellow intercollegiate athletes, because I feel as though we are being used. Each year my Penn State teammates and I, as well as other high-profile college teams generate millions of dollars in revenue, yet we do not get paid for our services. Millions of dollars are made every year from food, drinks, tickets, and merchandise sales because of our strenuous work, not to mention the billions of dollars made from selling TV rights to our games to major networks. Intercollegiate sports are a big business in which the players are “slave laborers.” I am not suggesting that we be given an annual salary, but I feel that we should be given stipend or some financial assistance in addition to scholarship money.
Referencing is a crucial part in a student’s academic activities, as it is required whenever a student completes a piece of academic literature with information from other sources apart from himself. Any piece of academic writing has to be properly referenced if it draws information from sources other than the original author of the paper. Referencing lends credibility to any form of academic writing whether it is an assignment, a term paper, or even a thesis. Therefore, it can be defined as the process of acknowledging the sources of various ideas used within a document that do not belong to the documents author. It is important to discus both referencing and plagiarism according to unit 4 of UR courses by summarizing the ideas contained in the unit (Smithson 2014).
A college degree is one of the best educations that a person can get. It not only develops your mind, but it helps to develop you as a person as well. No matter what kind of degree you receive, whether it be a bachelors, associates, or masters you are more likely to get a better job than without it or with just a high school diploma. Workers with a college degree will earn much more and are much less likely to be unemployed than those with only a high school diploma. This paper will argue that with a college degree you are more likely to get a higher paying job than without a degree. I will support this argument with multiple scholarly articles and other valid sources to further convince you.
Steven Pinker states that “search engines lower our intelligence, encouraging us to skim on the surface of knowledge …” (1). Many students are not reading their assigned books anymore. Sparknotes and other web sites such as Shmoop have provided students with resources which are not useful. Students’ skim through these sites to read books. Most of the websites gives students’ plot summaries which are from another person’s take on that book .This damages the student 's’ chances of actually reading and understanding a book and having their own opinion .The more we run to search engines for answers the less we shall learn . Technology has taken the place of many students’ brains which causes them to think they are dumb. This leads to the need of searching for answers online at all
It is a quite nice, which made it easier to accomplish my assignments. When I needed to print out a paper for a class, I would use the printer available at the library. There were times, I would even scan or copy documents that were job related. When professors assigned group projects, it became challenging trying to find a location where members of the group can meet and complete the assignment. Another service the library offers is the group study room. Students and facility are able to reserve the room for academic purposes.
The current environment consists of basically nothing right now because there is not library on the Exton campus. The only way for students to use a campus library as of now is to go the main campus of Delaware County Community College in Newtown Square. This is rather inconvenient for most people because many reasons. For example the student may have a family to take care of and therefore not have the extra time to be travelling so far to use a library. Also some students may not have the use of a car in order to travel that far to use a campus library. The only way for an Exton campus student to use the main campus library is to request that certain books be sent to the Exton campus where they can pick them up and use them. These two new buildings were the Adams building, built in 1939, and the Madison building, built in 1980. Even though these new libraries were opened, the Main reading room stayed the central point of access for the libraries collections. Most people, weather they are doing specialized or general work will start in the main reading room. That reason is because the main reading room has the Computer Catalog Center, The main card catalog, and about 70,000 volumes in the reference section.Up-to-date information is maintained mostly by technology. “Oh, why didn’t you say that? It’s over there,” said sheen, pointing down to the class at the end of the hallway. Sheen led them to their class and sat a seat behind from Jimmy. Jimmy sat down and put his ball under his chair. The class was very spacious with 4 rows of 4 individual desks. The desks were all facing a chalkboard that was located in the front of the class. In the back of the class were four computers on individual tables. The chairs near those desks were very low. There was a little space that was dark between the tables.
Everyday I walk into my school library with the hope of influencing a student or a teacher to read a new book, use a new search strategy, or to collaborate on a unit of study. My goals for students range from getting to know them and their interests and then guiding the student to these new sources or literature. I look upon the library as a learning lab or, as some in my profession have dubbed it, the Learning Commons. Every morning I greet anywhere from 50 to 80 students who are waiting for the first bell of the day. These students are in the library because they have made a decision that this is their place; a hangout for those students who are drawn to a vibrant environment that is teeming with learning and discussion.
Technology changes the way people work and learn. As the role of technology is being defined and is constantly being improved, change is inevitable (Davis-Millis, 1998; Brand, 2000). As a result, those involved in higher education have to find ways to adapt to technological change. Administrators, faculty, academic librarians, and students should define the role of technology for the purposes of (1) sharing new ideas and techniques for teaching and learning; (2) encouraging enthusiasm and innovativeness; and (3) learning about opportunities and challenges, and how to deal with them (Landsberger, 2001).
The world is at your fingertips with the internet, you can do anything imaginable. It is the schools duty to have the internet, forget the library, I’m sure students would agree with me that using the internet would be much easier to find the information you are looking for than the library. If you don’t know how to use the internet then you are missing out, anything you want is on there. The internet alone could be a career, there are online businesses that make just as much money as jobs outside your home.
