Summary of Article Sev’er’s article on the Mainstream Neglect of Sexual Harassment as a Social Problem discusses the absence of published articles about sexual harassment in the US and Canada. She goes on to discuss some reasons for the absence, as well as the problems that may arise from this absence along with some details about the impact of sexual harassment. She referenced a number of articles that have empirical data that shows that sexual harassment is a major prominent social problem and not many articles in mainstream publication are about sexual harassment, gender issues, and working women. Firstly, Sev’ er referenced the Canadian Human Right Annual report in 1991 as showing that 37% of women believed they’ve been sexual harassed and a study conducted in 1981 showed that 92% of women in a trade study felt they have been sexually harassed well working. Secondly, she analysed the number of articles published that address sexual harassment and related issues, as well as sent out a surveys to 24 authors that were listed on those articles for referral to other articles that have been published. Her evidence showed not a single mainstream article about sexual harassment, in Canada, has been published in 9 years (back before 1996) (Sev 'er, A. 1996, pg. 7). As written in the text book, sexual harassment is, “comments, gestures, or physical contacts of a sexual nature that are deliberate, repeated, and unwelcome” (Macionis, J. J., Jansson, M. S., Benoit, M. C. 2012. page 268). Sexual harassment was noted in the article and text book as being a social problem that can be hampering to one’s job performance and quality of life. Also mentioned, as social structure goes, people are afraid of the repercussions of it, and what will happen if something is done about it. As mentioned in the article by CBC news, some female Mounties are concerned that they’re not being heard when sexual harassment happens in the workplace. The RCMP almost has a patriarchy or glass ceiling effect where women are not taken seriously, and the higher ranked men can do what they want without any serious repercussions. In Chapter 11 of William Shaw’s The Organization and the People in It goes over issue of sexual harassment in the workplace and its effects. Sexual harassment is defined as the “unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature”, most reports of sexual harassment are from women accusing men however men accusing women is becoming more prevalent in todays society (Shaw, p.444). Sexism is a highly talked about issue read about online, seen in the news, and experienced in the day to day lives of many. The importance of this issue can be found in many writings. Authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Linda Hasselstrom, and Judy Brady have all discussed the topic of sexism in writings and how they affected their lives. Although each writer addresses the issue of sexism, each author confronts a different type of sexism; the kind we are born into, the kind we learn growing up, and the kind that is accepted by society at the end of the day.

Despite legislation for equal opportunities, sexism is still evident in the workplace. Women have made great advancements in the workforce and have become an integral part of the labor market. They have greater access to higher education and as a result, greater access to traditionally male dominated professions such as law. While statistics show that women are equal to men in terms of their numbers in the law profession, it is clear however, that they have not yet achieved equality in all other areas of their employment. In “A distressing summer of workplace sexism reminds us how far we have to go” by Susanna Schrobsdorff, the author states, “according to a Pew Research survey released in August, most American men—56%— think sexism is over and done with. More than half believe that “the obstacles that once made it harder or women than men to get ahead are now largely gone. Of course, most women—63%—disagree” (Schrobsdorff 55). The misbelief that sexism still does not exist allows for the culture in which women continue to only be seen as sexual objects and not competent workers. Ehrenreich describes that, “[you should] watch out for Lon, who has a habit of following his female coworkers into service closets” (Ehrenreich 64). Ehrenreich is warned about a potential harassing employee and that it may happen to you, but most importantly, the behavior is normalized instead of trying to stop it. In “Not Just Fox” by Katha Pollitt, she explains that there is a misconception when it comes to being harassed and it is that, “being harassed is not a matter of weakness; it’s about the enormous power differential between worker and boss” (Pollitt 6). This is further supported by “ a 2015 Cosmopolitan survey, 71% of women said they did not file complaints about sexual harassment, likely because they feared appearing difficult or ‘too sensitive.’And they worry about retaliation and job security” (Schrobsdorff 55). It also bases itself on the assumption that gender is a predetermined that distinguishes people into two distinct categories. Although rape is real, it is rather enabled by misconceptions. In order to envision a society without rape or less rape, it is radical for people to recognize that social construction has had enormous impact on how it is practiced and perceived.

It violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Sexual Harassment Policy, which is currently in place in all schools and work places, is aimed at providing an educational and work environment free of harassment. This includes sexual harassment and every form of intimidation or exploitation.
Sexual harassment is so ordinary in the workforce that frequently we fail to even recognize harassing behavior as immoral.
