An Afternoon of Detention

Rhonda Tubbs is sitting behind her desk. Lucas is sitting across from her.

RHONDA

After the last time you were in here I looked at your records. You were an exceptional student in Boston. You started a band with some of your classmates. Played soccer. Your art teacher sings your praises.

Rhonda ignores Lucas' impertinent stare.

RHONDA

And then your mother died.

LUCAS

(scoffs)

It says that in my file?

rhonda

I know because your father told me. We've barely been in school a month and already your making weekly trips to my office.

She pauses as if she expects a response.

LUCAS

So?

RHONDA

So are you seeing a therapist?

LUCAS

We were. In Boston.

rhonda

Your dad said y'all would be seeing a family therapist.

LUCAS

Okay, so why are you asking me?

RHONDA

Because I am. How are things with your therapist?

Lucas clearly doesn't want to answer but Rhonda maintains a look of benign interest.

LUCAS

Fine.

RHONDA

It is? So then why do you spend so much time getting in trouble with Eric and Zach?

LUCAS

They're my friends-

RHONDA

They are not your friends. They don't bring out the best in you. I don't think this is you at all.

Lucas scowls.

rhonda (con't)

Okay. You and your friends are gonna spend the rest of the afternoon in detention.

LUCAS

Man...

RHONDA

Finally, an appropriate response. And I'll be speaking to your dad this afternoon. I think it'll be better for you to transfer to another school.

LUCAS

I'm getting expelled!

RHONDA

No, I'm recommending you transfer. The detention room is in the library. Your teacher has already sent over your assignments. Go on.

Lucas gets up and walks out of the office.

Amy stands on Owen's front porch. She is holding two gift bags.

...

... middle of paper ...

...nd mustard.

Amy jumps up to help him. Once the items are unloaded Lucas sits slumped at the table and Amy returns to her seat.

OWEN

Our place in Boston didn't have a yard so no grill. I'm glad Emma wanted birthday dogs. Gave me an excuse to go out and buy one!

EMMA

I like lines on my dogs.

Owen

She means the grill lines.

emma

Duh. Daddy can I wear my princess dress?

OWEN

Sure. Lucas, go help your sister put on her costume.

lucas

She can dress herself, Dad.

OWEN

I'm not asking.

LUCAS

Why do I have to do everything?

OWEN

Moan, moan, moan...

Lucas rolls his eyes as Emma drags him inside the house.

OWEN

I am so sorry about him. He's just...

AMY

I understand, really. My mom died when I was young, too.

OWEN

Well...

Owen suddenly seems restless. He gets up and starts poking around with grill.

AMY

We don't have to talk about it. It's soon.

OWEN
