Recommended: Amir character analysis essay

Throughout the story, Amir and Hassan became increasingly distant from each other. Amir constantly tests Hassan’s loyalty to himself, unsure of whether or not Hassan is truly his friend but more his servant. With everybody’s hate towards Hazaras, Amir’s judgement and diction is clouded by their bias and soon too believes that Hazaras are inferior. This becomes more evident during the kite running tournament, Hassan was running for a kite to end the tournament and got surrounded by bullies; ended up getting raped. During the entire time, Amir stood there and just watched Hassan get raped, rationalizing his decision by deciding that Hazaras are inferior to everybody else shown by “The answer floated to my conscious mind before I could thwart …show more content…

Amir is envious that he doesn’t receive as much of Baba’s attention as Hassan; until after the kite tournament. Baba has always perceived Hassan as his own son, even hiring surgeons to fix Hassan’s appearance. All of Baba’s actions towards Hassan leaves Amir befuddled; unsure as to why he he goes out of his way for a Hazara. Due to the social diversions in Afghanistan, Amir cares about his appearance towards others; not wanting to be with Hassan because he believes he’ll be looked down upon; treating a Hazara as a close friend is rare and considered taboo. If he becomes close to Hassan, then Amir fears that he won’t be able to get Baba’s attention; if people look down on Amir then Baba as well will look down on Amir. To accept Hassan as his true friend means to accept him as his equal; his perspective on Hassan is influenced by his environment, thriving on the idea of social differences between the Afghans and the Hazaras. “But in none of his stories did Baba ever refer to Ali as his friend”(Kite Runner, Page 25) related to Amir because he believes that he should do the same thing to Hassan; if Baba did it then Amir has to consider doing the same …show more content…

Their relationship was already facing difficulties, due to the social expectancies and differences in their status and personality. Amir did not want to be Hassan´s friend after the kite running tournament because he felt guilty about what happened. Seeing Hassan reminded him of his failure of a friend, and he believed that Hassan was upset when seeing him too. This led Amir to believe that one of them must leave the house, and their continued friendship would only cause pain. Amir tries to alleviate this guilt when they are under the pomegranate tree and he hits Hassan with the pomegranates. Amir doesn´t do this because he is angry at Hassan, he tries to get Hassan to hit him, because he feels it is what he deserves after doing nothing to help
