What Is Nursing?
A beautiful thing about our world is that everybody sees, describes, and defines things differently. But when it comes to defining a nurse or nursing, there are some key words that any person in our world would use. The American Nurses Association (ANA) (2016) defines nursing as:
The protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. I will have completed my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and possibly my Masters as well. I envision myself traveling from state to state, contract to contract. Not only will I be seeing the sights and tourist stops of our country, but I will be healing and caring for many different types of people who will need me. Being said, 10 years from now I plan to be settled in one location with my family. At 35, I’ll possibly have my Doctorates degree and be decided on what I want to specialize in. I also need to balance my job, health, and family. Working the front desk at a fitness facility helps me immensely in balancing my life demands. It is a very slow paced job with a lot of down time. Therefore, I am able to study and do my homework while getting paid by my job! I also get a free gym membership, and working out relieves my stress, keeps me healthy, and helps me sleep better at night. I will also try my best to eat a balanced diet and get the vitamins that I need. I will be living with my family until I graduate, so I will always be around to continue to spend time with them. Last, I will always make time to watch my favorite TV shows or go out with my friends in order to get my mind off of school. “A nurse experiences stress unknown to most professions” (Masters, 2017, p199). That tells me that it is essential to start these good habits now, stick with them, and carry them into the future to be the best nurse I can
