The American flag represents different thing to each person, but what does the American actually mean? The flag could mean whatever one wants it to mean. For some the flag might be meaningless and might not symbolize anything, although for other the flag means everything. In addition the flag represents pride of their country to some people. For me, the American flag represents freedom of the people and my country. It represents the will of people for giving as well as democracy. For starters, usually when children are little they tend to just see the American flag as a piece of cloth with three different colors and stars. When we are little we sing the pledge of allegiance to the flag the first thing in the morning and most of the children do not really pay attention. I believe people lack respect for the flag and what it stands for. Although most people are proud to be an American, some don’t understand what it truly means to be an American. However, when you think of a burning flag, what comes to mind? One might say it shows disrespect and hatred to a country that has given so much. In the case of Texas v. Johnson, Gregory Lee Johnson was accused of desecrating a sacred object, but, his actions were protected by the First Amendment. Although his actions may have been offensive, he did not utter fighting words. By burning the flag, Johnson did not infringe upon another's natural human rights. He was simply expressing his outrage towards the government, which is within the jurisdiction of the First Amendment.
